Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We use "American Pageant" and its companion workbook. My kids have only used part of the workbook. There is a lot of review in there
Then we use Annals of America that I key to each chapter. The Annals are original essays, documents, stories, news clips from the time period.
Then, of course, we read good literature from some chapters of the book. For example, "Philip Fithian" for colonial American. Fithian was a tutor hired by Virginian plantation owners in colonial America. He wrote a daily diary and it is quite engaging. Tells all about daily life and education of the family.

We plan to cover through Reconstruction by February. The rest of book, we skim and do a lot of supplementing. I am not thrilled with some of the "movements" in the 1890's and 1920's as explained in the book. I find that I can cover what I want from there from other sources just as well.

By the way, "The Illustrated Edition of 1776" (McClullough) is way cool. We bought it a little damaged at a bookstore for $12. It has documents, pictures, etc. and condensed text for his original book. Take a look at that one, even if you interlibrary loan it.

Hope this helps!
BLessings,
Stephanie
