Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

For those who have watched it: I have listened to the first 3-4 lectures. Does anyone implement the learning journal he suggests. I know lost of people who love this series but I just can't see implementing the learning journal. That seems more for kids who are in a class outside of home and have lectures (which mine don't). I have my kids take notes on text book readings and underline and do the annotated reading style he suggests already - so, is it worth it to watch? We are already going to be watching history dvds and if this isn't worth it for a strictly homeschool environmnent then I won't have the kids watch it. Please share your experiences and opinions of this for homeschoolers.

Thanks! Barb

I think it's well worth it. You've already said you are going to be watching the History DVDs. Those are lectures . And they are great for practicing the techniques in Superstar Student, which can then be applied later when your highschooler is a college student. I wouldn't skip any of it. As a matter of fact, we're about to do the whole series with the third child next week.

Good news. I have Superstar Student on my shelf and need to sit with my son to watch soon.

Well, I knew deep down that ds should watch this. I was being a bit of a coward because I knew he would balk at the idea of taking notes during the dvd especially. He already has started taking notes during his history ready - however they are a bit sparse. I know he does just a very little he can to appease me! Well, Hopefully these dvds will inspire! Thank you for encouraging me to watch them with him - it was the push I needed to get paste the whine that will come (actually he doesn't whine - he kind of grunts. Thankfully - I think this technique is right up my 6th grader ds alley. She takes good notes about her textbook reading and we have a TTC history dvd for her to watch too. Ds is watching the History of the U.S. (with 3 different college profs) and dd is watching Early Am. history by Linwood thompson. So, Elizabeth you are right - time for them to use the learning journal. I even have various unused binders to choose from!

Sorry for this being so long. One last question - ds dislikes binders for notes but loves spiral notebooks - do you think the learning journal would still work. He could still divide the right page for text and dvd notes and leave the facing blank for later. I like binders better. But. . . I may want to choose my battles.

we just started them...I think there's some stuff well worth it in them. Things that *I* think are common sense, but might only be common sense because I'm 36 and not an inexperienced 14 yr old.

Things like how to make a master schedule.
Things like waiting until after class to speak to the teacher to avoid ridicule or annoying the teacher.

That's what we've managesd so far. I watched the parent part at the end first, then the schedule thing, and now we are starting at lesson 1 with son together.

I personally hate the notion of having a "learning journal" and pretty much anything else that comes anywhere near being similiar in any way to a diary. I've always refused to do it and probably always will. I remember getting an "F" on every weekly personal journalling assignment in 5th grade I disliked it so much, so I'm thinking that is one of those personality issues that isn't going to change anytime soon. My blog is probably as close as I will ever come to it.

Martha, Watch the learning journal part, its not what you think. It is really a system for taking notes from a textbook and then at a class lecture (or in my case dvd). I definitely think the systems he shows will work for college classes, so I am thinking of ds starting now to make it a habit (only thing is he may not agree)!

You're right! It's much better than I thought when we did it this afternoon. I'm holding judgement for after the next couple of lessons.
