Some of you may remember that I agonized over whether or not to pull my 16yos from private Catholic back to homeschool. Well, he didn't make the grade minimum at 1st semester as he promised, so we brought him home as of this week for the second half of his Junior year and we'll keep him home next year too.

I think he was secretly relieved -- lots of junk has been going on, so it's good to see him reverting to his old self a bit.

Anyway, I think this is going to work. He loves sports, has a natural affinity for writing and wants to major in Sports Broadcast (or dual major in Communications and Sports Management).

Last night my dh had a brain wave: the Orange Bowl started at 8 and ds should stay up and write up an article about the game to be presented to dad this morning. Well ds jumped at the chance. We don't have cable, so ds sat on the computer and "watched" the play-by-play on ESPN.com. In between parts of the game he wrote up an article which was excellent. He had time to do some research on the stats and background of each of the coaches to round out the article nicely; this morning, he had two fresh copies of the article on the table at his dad's place. A wonderful write up of a bowl game that went into triple overtime! He finished his article at 1:45 a.m.; I decided he could sleep in till 9 this morning as he'd worked so hard last night.

Can't do that in "traditional" school!

Tonight's the Rose Bowl so he'll be able to take what he learned from his journalistic errors last night (I wasn't a journalism major in college for nothin') and remedy them tonight.

Great assignment! I'm glad he enjoyed it.

We're a bit bleary-eyed today from watching the game. Well, I couldn't watch...my nerves can't take the stress. My dh is a HUGE Penn State fan, so I'm very relieved they won. But I'm still tired...the cheers and moans from the fans downstairs (dh, my brother and brothers-in-law) was enough to keep the dead awake!

Ummm...I happen to know a certain someone who is a live remote sports producer/director for ESPN, Foxsports and others...we never "watch" sports around here; we analyze production. We've even been know to cal the truck in the middle of a broadcast to offer a suggestion (rarely). If he's home, it's hilarious to watch with him. I love your idea!
