You all have been such a help to me, let me put another question to you for input.
What are your favorite resources for teaching teens about chastity, especially boys?

I love Jason and Chrystalina Evert's books and talks. We've seen him twice now, and my son really respects and admires him, something that is hard to get from a 15 year old sometimes.
Their website is Pure Love Clubs
Just click on STORE on the header at the top on the website to see all of their resources there you can get. They have books and videos. I saw too that you can listen to their talk online here:
Romance Without Regret
Hope this helps!

I second the recommendation for the Evert's materials, particularly for boys. I also like Mary Beth Bonacci's stuff - Real Love website

I am glad to see you can get the talks with out attending...so I can listen. But mostly I have concerns about girls and boys in a mixed group listening together. I prefer to separate them.
Has anyone read "Not Even a Hint" by Joshua Harris about avoiding lust?
Thanks for the links to these sites..they will be useful here.

Have any of you read Jason Evert and Joshua Harris? I have heard really good things about the Harris books, especially his second one, Boy Meets Girl, and wonder if Evert touches on the same issues and who you think handles it better. I know Evert is Catholic, but that isn't necessarily a selling point for my son right now. I think which ever author seems "cooler" while preaching chastity would be more persuasive.
Apparently, in Boy Meets Girl, Joshua Harris talks about the sadness of his new wife who did not live a chaste life when she had to admit it to him and they had to deal with that in their marriage. I am really trying to emphasize my son's responsibility to protecting the purity of the girls he gets involved with. I think appealing to their role of protector, to their manhood, is the most effective tool in getting them to understand chastity.
I was thinking about Real Love and wondering if it would appeal to a teenage boy since it is written by a woman. Any thoughts?

I have only skimmed Joshua Harris' book "I Kissed Dating Goodbye" so can't really do a side by side comparison between the two as authors. I will have to say that Jason Evert does come across as pretty "cool." He is young and funny and does seem to relate well to the young people. It's interesting that you say those things about Josh Harris and his wife as that sounds very much like Jason and Crystallina Evert. She did not have a chaste youth either but turned her life around to secondary virginity before meeting Jason. There is some pretty powerful testimony about the letters she wrote to her "future spouse" when she started living a chaste life again.

Molly,
Go to Steve Wood's site
Catholic company with Catholic materials and written by men.
There is a CD entitled How to Raise Godly Young Men as well as other chastity materials.
Also, an added plus, they have cassettes and CDs incase you have a non-reader who would listen to a tape before reading a book.

Molly,
Jason Evert is very *cool*, and why I said that my son really admires him. My son is very much into feeling the need to be *cool* these days (being 15yo, and the type of kid he happens to be). He thinks Jason Evert is hysterical, and really *hip* (MY word, not his ). He really listens to what he has to say because he is so in tune with the kids of today, and understands the culture of THIS world they're living in.
I think Joshua Harris seems neat, and all he's done is great as well. We just haven't seen him or read his books, so that's why I recommended what we know.
I felt like your son is much like mine when reading your post, and could really identify with what you're looking for, because Jake is the same way, needing to have things come from him in a very *now and in* sort of way. That's why I'm always looking for that approach with him.
Here at Catholic Answers shop, they have many Chastity resources and books (and many Evert resources) as well.
Catholic Answers shop
It's funny, because the first time we saw Jason Evert, Jake talked about him for a long time afterward. Then when we asked for him to go again (as a refresher, which I feel is necessary to be on top of the matter constantly), he didn't complain ONE bit. THAT'S how I know he's good and can identify with him, and really respects what he has to say. Otherwise, it would have been not fun to get him to go if you know what I mean (they can make it torture for us if they want, can't they? ).
He spoke at one of the huge Catholic churches here the second time, and at a teen youth conference the first time. He was here speaking at many high schools. I think there may be times he even speaks at public schools if they ask him to. But he really is fantastic, and very much in tune with today's teen, that's for sure!
I remember one thing Jake told me that Jason really impressed upon him. Jason told them, *You shouldn't do anything with a girl that you wouldn't do if God was standing there with you.* I thought that was really a great mental picture for them, and something to make them really think. That's what he does, I think.
I hope these things all help. The Lord will lead you to the best resources and people for you.

Just wanted to second the recommendation for Jason Evert! Way cool!! And powerful!! He gave THE BEST talk I have ever heard on any topic entitled, "Cool to be Catholic", at a youth conference we attended. I think if every Catholic in America could hear this talk we wouldn't have such the lukewarmedness (is that a word?) problem we do. He is awesome!!! Highly recommended!
I really liked Joshua Harris' book, I Kissed Dating Goodbye. I can't remember now if there are any Protestant/Catholic issues...I don't think so. It is written from a teen and young adult point of view, so I think the teeens would really like it. It makes a great argument for not dating the typical American way.
Love anything Steve Wood puts out also!

Dear Erica,
Is there any way to get a copy of the "Cool to be Catholic" tape? I'm looking for some audio resources to add to our religion program.
Also...at what age do you introduce all this chastity material aimed for teens? I have the Evert/Crystallina video and watched it with dh a year ago. I thought it was excellent, but there are things he addresses that my 12 yr old doesn't even know about yet.
I can't decide if it would be better to introduce ds to these ideas through the tape, or wait till he's a bit older.
I could use some advice...

Books,
I'll check on the copy of his talk. He's sure to have given it other places as well. He works for Catholic Answers which is right here in San Diego...we are so lucky!! We'll see Jason at Mass occassionally and at various youth functions in the diocese.
From my understanding, Jason and Crystallina have different talks for different audiences. I remember way back when he spoke at our parish, him asking me about the topic of o--- s--. They had been addressing this issue at public schools because it is such a problem, even in the junior high schools. At the time, I didn't feel it was appropriate for our group, so he just geared the talk in other directions. I think they have given talks to just homeschoolers over the years...those would probably be best for our group here.
If our children were out in the school systems (public or private), I would say junior high school is the best time to present this material. For our homeschooled kids, it seems like it could be much later??? I don't have teens yet, so I don't really know. Some of this stuff I never want my kids to hear about!!! I don't think I am being naive. We'll cover the main issues all from the beautiful Catholic perspective, but I think we can avoid so much of the "crud". So, it's good to be discerning even about chastity talks from great people, because sometimes out of need to their audiences, "crud" gets thrown in there!
Others with teens must have good advice about all of this. For us, we want to preserve our children's innocence as long as possible, not necessarily from real life stuff that comes up in families, but from words and images that immoral books and movies would put in their heads. Dh and I have seen so many teens, young teens at that, whose images and understanding of sex and chastity are just ruined because of the books they've read and movies they've seen. Jason is extremely gifted at reaching these kids - God bless him!
I am on such a ramble....I think I need some good adult conversation as dh is gone during the week now!!! Sorry if I've said too much!

Has anyone used a Theology of the Body program for teens? I found some podcasts and was wondering if anyone has had any experience with it or with attending a conference by these guys. I'll check out the other chastity resources you've got here. thanks!

Erica,
You have said so beautifully what I was thinking I was pondering how to answer Books question regards her 12yrold and you said it all and more.
There are so many things our teens don't have to deal with, certainly not at the ages their peers do. My own 12dd is still so innocent and unaware but I know she wouldn't be like this if she wasn't hs. That is the thing with some of these talks, if you can get someone to aim it to the audience that's great. Otherwise often it wouldn't be needed until a later age than their peers.

Erica,
I am with you on this. We need to know our teens and what to expose them to.
So far, we like to start with an old book "Listen Son"
( there is a corresponding book for girls). Now, not everything in the book is good but it is to be used between parent and child so can be adapted.
We also like to talk about things as the opportunuty arises, esp with boys and puberty issues.
Persoanlly , my kids haven't needed info on deviations iykwim - I guess as the older ones became young adults such info is widely available and they have had a good grounding, through discussion/reading, in chastity and church teaching? So far..
I am re-reading "Three Steps to a Strong Family" by the Eyres right now and was struck, this time through, with their idea of writing resolutions in diaries for personal reflection and later review. Chastity goals. Goals for not using drugs or abusing alcohol. Talking about plans to avoid certain situations.

I know this posting is older, but I think there are some wonderful resources here that can be re-visited.
I too just created a postingof some of the purity & chastity treasures our family has discovered and has been using.
Does anyone have any others they could add?
