My dd who will be starting 9th grade this August is very interested in doing Rosetta Stone Korean. She takes tae kwon do and would be able to use it/hear it several times a week "out in the world".

I called HSLDA to ask about what colleges would think of Korean since it's not the "typical" language. She said I needed to just call a bunch of colleges my dd may be interested in the future to see what they would say.

I'll do that next week. But I thought I'd come here and see if anyone else has any experience with a child who learned a nontraditional (so to speak) language and their experience with getting into college and what, if any requirements, they had left to do in college.

to the best of my limited knowledge, ANY foreign language is acceptable.

if anything, choosing one out of the ordinary might make her stand out in a positive way.

just be sure she really want it, because she's going to need at 2 or even 3 years of it depending on which schools you look at. That can be a long time with a langue you don't want to learn.

Excellent question! I don't have any answers for you but wanted to share that my ds (entering 9th grade also)takes Karate and has long been interested in learning Japanese. Of course he is welcome to do so, but my only concern is that I will not be able to help him with it at all.

Thanks! I called the HSLDA high school counselors. They said I needed to go to each school directly to see whether they would accept Korean.

I sent emails yesterday to a big handful of admission offices and so far so good. So I think we will be on for Korean. I even had one specifically say they were pleased with the Rosetta Stone choice as it is so "exceptional". Korean is an SAT II topic test as well so Notre Dame for instance, said she'd have to take that (not that she wants to go there

she told me, too big but a good big school example).

And Theresa, a friend of mine who started Rosetta Spanish last year said that during the year Rosetta worked hard and revamped their homeschool curriculum "stuffs" as before directions and answers were written in the language of choice. Now after the revamping, she is pretty sure everything has been translated into English for the teacher! So that's a start! And I decided I'm not too worried about helping her...she can get her help when she goes to taekwon class (only Master Kim doesn't know that yet!)
