Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Is Higher Education Important?

I originally posted this in the unschooling forum but thought it might fit better over here.

Interesting, Willa! I know I'm getting ahead of myself as my eldest dd is not quite 11, but I've been pondering the higher education thing a little recently. In the UK system she would be moving from primary to secondary education next year, and that feeds into a series of exams that eventually lead to university entrance. I'm trying to gear up to jumping through the necessary hoops with the minimum of effort (not laziness, just a desire to avoid what is often pointless busy work), while at the same time leaving as many future options open as possible. Unless she develops in ways that I can't foresee right now I can't see this dd ever wanting to study a subject for its own intrinsic interest. If she opts for higher education I think it will almost certainly be to study something vocational. Right now her main interests are dance, music and computers, and she thinks either dance teacher or web designer would be good options. As someone who is naturally academic, values academic study for its own sake and tends to assume higher education is a natural goal, I'm having to question a few of my own assumptions. For this child I suspect higher education may look quite different to the standard university track.
