My dd, who will be 9th grade next year, has informed me that she would prefer doing a chronological order to her hs history studies. She wants to start with Ancients. We were planning on doing Kolbe (I had been floating around on the SL thread too, but dd isn't too into their order of things when we looked at it). She however does NOT want to take 2 years for Greek and Roman as Kolbe lays it out.
Anyone ever combine these two years into one, either with Kolbe materials or not, for your high schooler?
I'd love to know what highlights you hit hard and if you think there are any resources or other books that are must do's!

no experoence here, but I did want to note that the kolbe course plans do give very honest notes about what is essential, what is nice to add, and what you need for "honors (the whole plan) and what is okay to leave out entirely even.

Kacky, we did that and Kolbe will even help you with some modified plans highlighting the most important works. It is very doable as long as you don't try to cram everythihng they do in 2 years into 1 year - you have to pick and choose. Kolbe will send you plans for different quarters from each year so you can do that, and modify paper topics. Ie if they have you comparing 4 works and you only read 2, then you compare the 2 you read.
We wove our Kolbe history with RC history and did a bit more on Ancient civilizations other than Greek and Roman ones. Obviously we couldn't read all those primary sources and do the other Ancient history too.
I sat down with the child, advice from Kolbe and our own vision and we laid out plans for the year. The key is to have a game plan you are comfortable with so that you aren't spending the whole year adding in neat stuff that you just hate to miss. You can derail youself rather quickly that way - don't ask how I know.
This year we've moved on into early church and medieval and will move sequentially from there. We will probably finish or tackle about halfway through the 11th grade plans this year - and move from there. We're not sure yet whether we are taking 4 or 5 years. Initially we decided to take 5, now dd is anxious to finish. If she is able to finish what she needs in math and science, we'll be jury rigging the lit and history to make sure we touch on things we both see as highly important - like a really good government course.
Kolbe is quite flexible and more than willing to even help you do this kind of thing. Evidently there are quite a few folks who ask to combine the Greek and Roman year so they have all those suggestions pretty quickly available.
When you order materials and register, just be sure to remind them of which plans you are getting. You are free to get a certain number of quarters and that all comes with the registration. Those quarters can come from any year. I think they will be charging for plans above a certain number so be sure to ask them when you talk to them.

I combined Kolbe's 9/10 for my oldest using MODG 10th grade history/lit syllabus.... which covers Ancient History. There were some things in Kolbe's reading that I didn't want to expose my child to just yet since I was too busy to supervise.... MODG had excerpts, say, of Herodotus rather than the whole thing, and that suited me.

This is what I would like to do as well
Janet, I have been derailed enough that this first highschool year for my oldest is something I want to plan more deliberately. It's great to hear that Kolbe is so flexible...
Willa, would the MODG syllabus be too much for a ninth grader? (Wondering whether I should wait a year....)

No, I don't think it would be, Kristie. I think it's only in 10th grade because of MODG's progression (they cover US HIstory in 9th). It was easier by a degree than Kolbe's 9th grade program. Of course your mileage may vary.
I don't remember how much tweaking would be needed to fit it in with Kolbe. I think I used Kolbe's religion program and had Liam do some extra reading from the Kolbe syllabus to complement the MODG. But MODG provided a nice resource he could just pick up and go with.
Here is MODG's 10th grade book list
Here are samples of Kolbe's course plans

Thanks ladies, this is great. I was assuming we're not the only ones who wanted to but those together in one year (Greek and Roman). Dd wants to do Ancient History (& Ancient LIt) for 9th, the Medieval/European History from Kolbe for 10th with the British Lit from Sonlight, then for 11th she wants to do Sonlight's core 300 which is 20th Century World History with a year long Shakespeare study and then for 12th grade do the Kolbe modern history and add in some more American history and do Kolbe's American Literature.
So one step at a time, I'll be working on combining those years. So glad to know there are great resources to help with that!

I was thinking of the same progression Kacky but with Canadian and British History for 12th.
Thanks Willa.

Kacky,
Did you look at RC History? That program combines the ancients into 1 year.
