Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Seton Literature
Seton Grammar and composition
Seton Religion

I'm enrolling in those Seton courses "just in case" I do decide to use them for diploma later. (They require the lit/history/rel all be Seton to get their diploma) It's not much more to fully enroll, so I might just do that, but not submit grades for other courses. He's almost done with Seton reading and english 8 this year and although it's been hard at times, it seems to be getting through to him.

Algebra 1 - I plan on conintuing with LoF math because it is working for him! (I really think those 2 years of Saxon traumatized me ) I also have Lials and Key To Algebra on the shelf if we need back up for some reason.

Kolbe history course. I also bought the greek literature books, but not that course. Seton doesn't have a hisotry requirement for 9th grade, but the counselor there said I could use this as an elective credit. (I hadn't even thought of elective much yet! too focused on basic requirements!)

Kolbe religion. I might only turn in the minimum requirement for Seton's religion and just do Kolbe. It look much more engaging.

Spanish Luna

MP Logic 2

what do you more experenced ladies think of this? suggestions to add or remove or tweak or ???

well ..
the ONE subject my ds has really taken to is a desire to learn foreign languages.
of course that means it's the ONE subject I've had a bear of a time getting cemented in for him.

rosetta stone didn't move fast enough or deep enough for him and caused the computer to crash, then it didn't work on the new vista computer then it was outragiously expensive to buy a vista version - so gave up on that

power glide and learnables were frustrating because they don't have a speech component and I don't speak spanish, so who knows if what he is saying is anything like it shoudl be? and when all is said and done, they aren't much less than rosetta stone - ditched that option

so no we are moving onto Spanish Luna. Every Tuesday and Thursday for 1 hour he puts his headset on and dials into Skype for an online teleconference and lesson with his Columbia south american tutor. So he can see his lesson on the screen and talk in spanish with his tutor at the same time. It's $80 a month, which is a lot for us, but not bad for what we get. I like it so far but we've only done it for 3 weeks. Ask me again in a year and I'll tell you how far or not he's gone with it. You pay month to month. No contract, no credit card, cancel any day you want. So from my perspective it's all win-win at this point.

Martha, please give your feedback. Did you stay with this program?

We were able to use them for about 7 months before my dh lost his job over a year ago. I wasn't impressed with the very small amount of progress he made.

So the hunt for a decent foreign language program continues. This is the ONE subject vie had niching but trouble with since day one of home schooling.

Thanks for the feedback, Martha.

With our oldest, she took 2 years of Latin with a local hsing class...which ended in a weird drama , but that was enough to get her 2yrs for college entry. As an incoming college student who needs to show a 2 year mastery of a language, she is switching to Spanish at college. Not the original plan but she's excited about it.

This summer we started Rosetta Stone Spanish with our incoming high school freshman. The above mentioned college student is studying with him. We'll see where this goes...

Yep...foreign language has been a bit bumpy around here, too.

Love,

We have had real trouble finding suitable foreign language materials - even though my husband and I are modern language graduates and my husband was a high school foreign language teacher. We have reviewed and reviewed and not been satisfied - not even with the big ticket ones such as Rosetta Stone and Tell Me More. Anyway - we have finally settled on one - I will report back once we actually have it - Breaking the Barrier - content looks great (and price is reasonable)- we are doing French. I am just concerned about how it will work in a homeschool. For us both my husband and I are fluent French speakers so my daughter will have no problem. I will review it from the perspective of someone who does not have any background in the language.

There are some fairly good free resources on the web for language learning too - well for French anyway. I am not sure about Spanish.

I've been in the foreign language dilemma also. My dd did Spanish 1 in 9th gr using Alpha Omega lifepacks. It was okay. It is well laid out and has cds. She was not crazy for spanish though and was going to do ASL at the CC, but then we found out it wasn't offered at the campus near us. So now she's a senior and I'm looking back into Spanish. I'm very annoyed also because I had the Spanish 2 lifepack set, but sold them. I was close to getting Tell Me More last week when it was on sale at homechoolbuyerscoop, but she does not like to sit in front of a computer for school.

Very frustrating subject to plan!
