Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Can anyone give me tips on combining highschool and college? My 9th grader is dyslexic and (as is often the case) very bright. he retains everything he hears and reads so I don't want to have him repeat classes such as biology or math that would be nearly the same in highschool and college. The writing and testing process is very cumbersome to him and I don't think he could keep it up for 8 more years.   But I think he would be a good candidate for focusing intensely now in order to get dual credit and try to finish in a shorter time. Can you recommend any on-line articles or books to help us navigate this uncharted (for us) territory. He is 14 1/2 and my oldest of 8. It's one thing to be nervous about homeschool highschool but this kid learns so totally different from anyone else I've known or read about. He really wants to have a college degree and I want to help him succeed. Ideally we'd like to have any distance education be of a Catholic source but the cost may be unreasonable.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Jennie Lou, my dd (a traditional learner) is doing well taking courses at the local community college as a 16yo. If you have a community college near, you might want to contact them. Ours has been very encouraging and helpful.

Love,

I don't have kids in highschool yet, but I know that high schoolers can take CLEP or AP exams and get college credit.

There is also a Christian coaching program that helps students earn their bachelor's degree faster, for a lot less than normal college. Students in high school have done it, and have successfully attained their college degree by the time they are ready to graduate from high school. The basic idea is that a coach is assigned to your child to help guide him through the whole process. A student is first given a talent and career inventory to assess strengths and narrow down a career choice. Then a student spends some time learning efficient study skills like speed reading and memory work. Finally, a student is guided through which CLEP tests to take. You can find more information at the website www.collegeplus.org.

Isa, I was just looking at Collegeplus! right before I posted my question! I was afraid it might not be Catholic-friendly since I had heard about it through the Vision Forum. Has anyone had direct experience with Collegeplus! or is there a Catholic alternative? That is the sort of thing I was looking for but I'm open to ALL ideas.

PS. I just noticed your reading list link and thought I'd let you know that I've been working my way through your compilation for several years now for this same son. He has a membership with Recordings for the Blind & Dyslexic and I search for a each title to see what I can get for him on CD. It's so nice to have all those reading lists in one place so I'm not flipping through books and forgetting what I've searched for in the past. Thanks for making this available!
