Does anyone know anything about the campus ministry/Catholicity of UVa-Charlottesville? Orthodox or not? Liberality of education overshadowing good works of campus ministry? etc, etc.
What about JMU or GMU?
Thanks!

Well, Lisa I tried both Newman and FOCUS and neither seems to be at UVa - does that make sense that a large, public college wouldn't have an organized Campus Ministry?
That's why I'm asking for comments ... I can't find anything on UVa's site!

Elizabeth has a close friend at UVA (besides the fact that she went there) who can give you some good insight.
As for George Mason (my alma mater)

Just another little plug for FOCUS: when Mike and I were active at GMU in the campus ministry, it was a great program. Mike was working at the university and we had a whole lot of involvement in campus ministry as young, newly-graduated adults. It was so much better than the campus ministry at UVa, where I'd graduated that I really mourned for what I'd missed. Now, that program at GMU is a FOCUS program and it's even better. It's truly a a special place of grace. Of course, not every secular college has FOCUS, but it's something to keep in mind when looking at colleges and when looking for ministries to support. |

Thanks Jen! I'm just trying to look for alternates for my Catie ... in-state Va schools would be better on the budget, but not if she'll lose her faith in the process.
GMU is probably too close to home ... but JMU is in such a gorgeous setting and UVa is wonderful for science/pre-med (which is her chosen field ... for now )

FYI: My friend whose kids are at Christendom told me that after some sort of scholarship/financial aid they received that it wasn't a lot more than going away to a state school. I don't know the details but I can ask her if you want.

We went and looked at Christendom and it's just so small ... too small for what Catie wants, altho it is a backup. She's also looking at Mt. St. Mary's (they give scholarships for kids of Catholic school teachers ) and there is a bit of orthodoxy there, FUS and Benedictine.
She won't have a time getting in ... but the money is a big factor (esp since we STILL haven't sold our house in Denver! )

Have you tried contacting the parishes closest to the schools for Campus Ministry information? My son is at VMI and the local parish has a wonderful Campus Ministry Program which serves 3 local universities.

Good idea Diana! I hadn't thought of that. When we were near Clemson, the parish acutally did a great Campus Ministry for the kids, including "adopting" students into parish families!
I think Cate is really leaning toward a Catholic college so I guess it's a moot point for us now.
