Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My daughter is just about 15 and is registered to take a Biology class this fall at our local community college. She has been homeschooled from Kindergarten and is thrilled with this idea. I am kind of scared to death. Does anyone have any experience/advice/helpful input in this area?

Don't be scared. Really.

My daughter has taken some classes at the cc too. She was very nervous -- until she went. She did fine. It really made her feel very confident and self-assured.

Here's a ((((hug)))) for you, Mom! She'll do fine!

My dd's experience has been better than we could have expected! She did extremely well in her classes, was very well accepted, and has made good connections with faculty and other employees...all of this and she is less than 5 miles away from home:).

Here's advise from my dd:

*Be confident.
*Expect to be among the most mature, well-formed, and enthusiastic in the class. And that's OK!
*If you feel that something is weird, even if the rest of the class is in agreement, you are probably right.
*Wear extra modest clothes to the first class.
*The seat you sit in for the first class is most likely the one you will sit in all semester so take one up front.
*Get to know your classmates. You don't have to best friends with them but it is good to have their cell phone numbers in case you want to double check about an assignment or let someone know you are sick.
*Look the teacher in the eye.
*Speak up.
*Find a personal connection with the teacher (dd's English prof. is a baseball fan and so is she - go Dbacks!)
*Always let the teacher know if you are going to be absent, sick, late, or if you have a question.
*Make a goal of engaging in each class by asking a question or joining in conversation.
*Don't drone on or lock into your own idea.
*Be prepared to argue your case.
*Get assignments in on time.
*Never complain.
*Avoid side talk but don't be cold and snobby.
*Be humble.
*Have a good sense of humor.
*Don't worry about being embarrassed or wrong.
*If you have already answered a question, don't jump to answer the next one. Let others answer...unless there is a really long silence, then go ahead.
*Don't *not* talk about your faith or let it be bashed and be prepared to defend it, but don't base all of your opinions and answers blatantly on your faith or the bible because you'll be dismissed. If you can, come from a Catholic perspective without being overly obvious and preachy - Evangelize always, when necessary use words:).
*Bring a sweatshirt because some of the rooms are freezing.

Let us know how she does...praying!

Love,

Thank you, Laura! Angie, I shared the advice list with my daughter. We are hoping to meet with as much success as you and your daughter! Thank you both very much for the encouragement.
