I'm looking at either spanish or french, and I need a program that does not require me to know the language (I know a little french, but if the program assumes I know a lot, I am sunk!  ). I'm all ears for recommendations and reviews. Is there anything you love and would use again and again?
Also, someone in CA told me that ASL is now considered a foreign language. Is that just in CA or is that everywhere? And do colleges really accept that as legit?

We LOVED our free Rosetta Stone access from the library. But, sadly, it is no longer available for us. Some state libraries might still offer it. Ds loved it and it was FREE!
Was though, so sad....

Our state library (Ohio) used to have it. When I asked about it, they said that the company was no longer making this option available. They did say that they were looking into finding something comparable to offer, though, since it was so popular.

Books
We have been discussing this in our house for weeks - here is my post on it
Learning Foreign Languages
We are still discussing - but I think Learnables is going to be our choice, but my dh is going to add on, as no program really has all we want.
Our library just stopped Rosetta Stone and added something called MANGO - but I cannot get any sound when I try it - at first glance it does not look too bad.

I have nothing else to compare too except text learning that I suffered through in high school. I liked the idea of immersion and at ds's age, 9 and 10, it was wonderful. He enjoyed working on the computer, it was like playing a game, and he did learn a lot. If I had the extra funds I would not hesitate to buy it.

Hi Books!
I bought ds Power Glide for German, and it looks great to me. I speak/read/write German fluently, as I used to be a translator in my life before dc. It is also more affordable than Rosetta Stone.

We got the Rosetta Stone Spanish.. like others.. all I have to compare it to is public school Spanish.. we bought it several years ago even though I found that the kids still needed too much help at that time to be truly independant at it.. I wanted to buy it when we needed much less of other things  but I played with it some myself.. and it is very good.. you were really learning it rather than learning to translate it.. like in high school.. we'd learn that perro=dog and then your brain would get it and picture/think dog.. with the Rosetta Stone.. i was going right from the spanish word to the picture in my head (just like I do with english).

I had tried to get my kids to learn Latin for several years. I could never get them into and I couldn't either. Last year, my husband bought Rosetta Stone for him and guess what the kids liked it! So they are finally learning Latin with Rosetta Stone. We are planning on buying the Spanish we can afford it. Even my resistant student loves it! I also love it because they can do it by themselves--I don't have to teach it! Thank goodness since I never learned Latin.

We're going to be using El Espanol Facil- (The Easy Spanish) over the next couple of years.

We just started Le Francais Facile! (The Easy French) with my daughter and it is going very well. They are also coming out with The Easy German and as you have noticed in Tracy's post, make The Easy Spanish. This is a program based on Charlotte Mason's method. It has Christian but not Catholic content.

I really like the Galore Park series So You Really Want to Learn Spanish
I also bought this year a book written by homeschool mom using Charlotte Mason approach to learning foreign languages.The Fun SpanishThis is not a high school level course but I think that can be a great complement to any program or use for a low key start with young kids.

We used Rosetta Stone this past year, as our library had it for free also, now discontinued. But we also used Seton's Spanish Now book along with it (usually 3 days of RS and 2 days of the book per week) b/c RS doesn't teach much grammar and not until much later (I don't know about the 2nd year, as we hadn't finished the first year).
So, if you are planning to give an entire credit for Spanish, I think you need more than RS, or more than just the first course, to count the same as high school Spanish.
(I would assume it's the same for French, etc.)

I'm interested to know how you all liked your Spanish curriculum this past year. I'm especially interested in The Learnables and The Easy Spanish.

Just a little note that this past week I emailed several colleges about the foreign language requirements for admission. Anyways, I had mentioned in the emails that I was going to be using Rosetta Stone. One of them wrote back that they were so pleased to hear we were using Rosetta Stone because it is "so exceptional" was the quote. I think that was from John Paul the Great University admissions.

Nice to hear that KackyK. Thanks for passing it on. We bought Rosetta Spanish a couple years ago and the kids did just the computer part for several months. The oldest who was 10 at the time really liked it and learned well, but we gave it up when the youngest was born. I am going to start everyone over with it this year and we are going to use the whole program...study guide and tests. The older 3 should be able to work independently I think. Since it takes 2 years to get through level 1 according to their plans does this count as 2 years of Spanish?
