Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Has anybody had to improve reading comprehension skills in a high schooler?   I am looking for suggestions on how to best do that in the next 2 years.

Thank you,

Hi Glin (welcome to the boards!) -- no more time to write longer, but one book that helped bring it home to dd how she needs to read for comprehension, digestion and analysis is "How to Read A Book" by Mortimer Adler. It's not light reading but so worth it. And the skills learned can be applied a bit at a time. Don't know if that's what you're looking for, but FWIW...

Thanks for the welcome, Stef.

I have the book you mentioned and started reading it myself last night. You're right, it's NOT light reading! I guess it's definitely not one of those books to read in bed when you're falling asleep, which is what I've been doing ... and thinking that dd may have troubles with it if *I* am!    But I need to give it some day-time reading, too, I suppose.

I'll stick with it, but if there are other ideas out there, please let me know. Thanks!

I found 7 Keys to Comprehension: How to Help Your Kids Read It and Get It!, by Susan Zimmermann to be really healpful and user friendly!
