Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Catholic Reluctantly is the first book in a new series from Sophia Press; a fascinating new series created by a team of young Catholic authors for young Catholic teens.

This series is written specifically for Catholic teens and the series purports to tell stories with problems and solutions that Catholic teens may encounter in their high school years. My 16 year-old daughter and I have read the first in the series and are very impressed with the story, the writing and the overall intent of the series.

So here’s the story-line of the first book: a Catholic school opened by parents is about to increase their enrollment by 40 percent – two new students are about to join the other five students in the run-down halls of John Paul 2 High School. The students are all different, with different academic and social backgrounds. In fact, the only thing that links the teens is that they’re all at least nominally Catholic. This sets up conflict from the get-go as each student is at a different place in their faith-journey. The seven characters are each a distinct "type" which you might find in a Catholic high school of 7 or 700.

I have been anticipating the release of this book. Today I talked briefly to an 18 year old homeschooler about it. He didn't enjoy it much and thinks it is to modern for his taste.

I hope to read it soon and I am looking forward to hearing what you all have to say about it.

Jen -- that's interesting. One of the characters is a homeschooled kid that is a bit rigoristic and he might have been offended by that?

My 16yod liked it and I did too -- I think it's a good (if a bit contrived) accurate portrayal of what can occur "out there" and how some folks try to fix the problems ....

Sounds like a fascinating project! I may just get this for our kids. Thanks.

A few years on and wondering if a few more members have read these books? Just reading a review and there are now four in the series. Thinking for ds16 but just not sure...not really grabbing me but willing to be convinced otherwise.

My 14 yo dd LOVES the books. She grown in our Catholic faith and felt moved by the books. She started to read the Regina Domain books but is not as engaged and stopped reading it. She's anxiously waiting for the next JP2 High book.

Just wondering if anyone has given this to a somewhat reluctant male readers, and what they thought. The video has lots of girls saying they loved it, but only one boy. I would like my ds15 to read it AND enjoy it!
