Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hello and help!
Our oldest is in 8th grade at a university-sponsored charter school and he'll be 15 next month. He started at our parish school back in kindergarten and has attended Catholic schools up to 6th grade. He repeated 2nd grade (at which time we switched parochial schools) and last year for 7th grade, we used Oak Meadow's homeschool program. The school he now attends is very academically structured and the small high school it has is the same. They do not offer "General Math" at all, so for 9th grade, he'll be doing Algebra, which he is struggling in and failing now. The school has been very helpful in wanting to assist him through an IEP and tutoring, but even if he passes, I don't know how he'll do next year, since the school is strictly college prep. He plans on going into law enforcement and has been to the State Police camp at the college he wants to attend. This is a community college with an open-door admission policy, so I'm not too worried if the only math he gets in high school is General math and a year of Algebra. He is so stressed about having to pass 8th grade that last week he cheated (and was caught) on a test. I wanted to take some of the pressure off him, so I told him that if the school holds him back, we'll enroll in a homeschooling program for high school, but I'm afraid now he'll just quit trying altogether. He's made a lot of friends at this school and is finally "fitting in" and finding his "niche", so part of me truly hopes he passes and goes on to the high school, but the other half is concerned that he'll be earning very low grades and just getting by if he is promoted to high school. Has anyone else had these struggles? Has anyone else had a homeschooler go into law enforcement? Any advice or opinions would be appreciated!

Blessings!
Joy

No General Math! That would be tough! Algebra is difficult and some kids aren't read for it in 9th grade. Would tutoring help? Could you arrange part-time attendance at school, so that he could still maintain friendships and opportunities he enjoys, but do some school work at home? Teaching Textbooks is a terrific math program - both my older children are using it. Having the CDrom to actually watch the answers to every problem has answered almost every single question we ever had with math! I'm so thankful for Teaching Textbooks and don't know what I'd do about math otherwise.

I hope you can find a solution soon - what a blessing to have a clear vocation so young!
