Is anyone currently using this and what do you think of it? I read the many positive comments posted when it first came out, but don't see much that is recent. It sounds like a great "fit" for my oldest son. For those who were impressed when they first read it, how has it worked out for you?

I bought it but I never used it. Its nothing like the Middle School Lesson Plans, which I have gleaned from/tweaked many times now. Personally, it doesn't have enough structure for me to find it indispensible.
I'm all for delight directed high school years, but for some reason, I don't know how to make this book work for us...

I have it and have used it. I have to log clock hours and find their daily log sheets very helpful for my recordkeeping.
I used it extensively when planning my son's high school 4-year plan. Basically, first I went to the websites of all the colleges I thought we could afford or that he'd want to apply to (Univ. of MD, Naval Academy, Univ. of Calif., etc.) and made a list of their entrance requirements...you know, 4 years of English, 3 years of foreign language, etc. I used that list and the HSOYD subject pages to offer ds a limited choice of science, languages, etc. I also used their textbook resource suggestions for each class.
For me, this book is a good fit because it offered me a way to turn some of my son's interests into subjects, and also presented alternatives for science, religion, and pretty much every other subject area. No, it doesn't tell you how to do things week by week, but I don't need that.
After last year (grade 9) I took it out again and reread some parts; I will probably be doing that again soon. High school years fly by extremely quickly; my son needs to start preparing for SATs and things like that in this new semester.

We used it this year for the first time, and I feel essentially the same way Nancy does. It fits us, as we are not highly structured, lesson-plan-oriented homeschoolers. What I have liked is the way that the program involves the student in planning his/her course of study, with exercises such as exploring college options and offerings, which help the student focus on what needs to be done now, in order the get there, wherever "there" may be for that child.
I like having so many links and resources organized in one book -- I generally have designed our own courses myself, but this resource has lists of texts, links, magazines, and other resources all catalogued for you. If you are a "do-it-yourselfer," this will seem like a Godsend. If you like to have plans laid out, it will not.
My daughter who is currently using HSOYD is very self-motivated; she is also good at logging her own time, planning her own schedule, etc. For her the program has so far been both a good fit with her own inclinations and a good exercise in taking responsibility for her learning.
In short, it works for us.

Like Nancy and Sally, this book is a good support for what we are doing (designing our own curriculum,) not a book that changed the way we looked at things or pointed us in a direction that we weren't already familiar with. I like hae the quick and compact resource for reference and having a book that describes what we do!
