Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Can I do biology without a text? I am going to order a dissection kit for my son and I have an outline of what needs to be studied in biology. Has anyone done highschool biology without a text and if so what did you do?(real books?)

Many thanks!

MacBeth's page is an excellent source for information for doing living high school science without a text. The linked section is specifically for biology.

My dd really enjoyed several books from MacBeth's list. She read them parallel to a Christian biology text that was given to us...made for interesting discussion.

Love,

So what all do you do with these books?
Just read 'em?

Any memorization? Just exposure?

I'm curious.

My dd outlines the living books as she does her literature. She follows the guidelines for how to read a book as outlined in The Well Educated Mind by Susan Wise Bauer. We discuss them as well.

Thank you, Angie! I'll have to get The Well Educated Mind. I guess we also could outline the way Bauer suggests in The Well Trained Mind too? (I have that book.) Oh! And lots of sketches, of course! My kids love to draw.

I wish I could! You might just want to borrow the book from the library or a friend because the actual process is summarized well (briefly considering the topic) at the beginning of the book while the rest and bulk of the book goes into detail about applying the process to different genres and specific books. Also, I know there are other books that describe "how to read a book"...Adler?...but we use this one because, it's what we have .

Love,
