Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hello,

I am wondering if anyone has had experience using the MODG (Laura Berquist) syllabus for Earth Science, 9th grade level.

If so, could I ask a few questions in an additional post?

Thanks!!

Yes, I have it. I have the syllabus, field guides, and Milliken Press books.

Thank you for responding,Mari!

Have you liked using the program?

Here are some questions my husband and I have:

- Did it do an adequate job of meeting HS requirements for Earth Science?
- How long does the course take (weeks)?
- How many days per week?
- How long per day?
- How much is compatible with self-study?
- How much is given over to astronomy in particular?

And, most importantly, what is your general impression about it!!

Thank you so much!!

There is lots of writing. I think Berquist uses this as an English requirement. So you can omit some of it. It covers geology, oceanography, meteorology, and astronomy in 8 week studies for each subject. I'm sure it does an adequate job of meeting HS requirements. It is a 32 week course, 4 days a week. I don't know maybe a half hour to an hour a day depending how much time you want your child to write. It is very self directed. They fill out worksheets that you copy from the Milliken books using the field guides as references. There are 8 weeks for astronomy in particular. I liked the program but would recommend getting some kits from Hometrainingtools to make it more exciting.   We were fortunate enough to have a geologist give us a course study in rocks and minerals and he had an extensive collection which my 9th grader said was wonderful. He loved handling the rocks and minerals instead of just seeing the pages in the field guides only.

Hope this helps!
God bless.

Oh! I'm having my eighth grader do this course this coming year.

This course is set up that each week you read about the topic, fill in the two worksheets and then the next day you write a 3/4 page essay and do an illustration. I've had two sons do this course through MODG teacher assisted program. It is a writing intensive course if done per the syllibus but I thought it was an excellent course. But it is time intensive. Those essays and illustrations can take quite a bit of time for most students. My second son did some really great illustrations on the computer. That said, I'm debating on this course for my upcoming 9th grader. He struggles more with writing, and the whole process of identifying important info when reading. This course would be tough for him UNLESS we modify it. Which MODG is fine with. He oucld do one essay a week instead of two. The skills that he needs to develop certainly could be learned well in this format. It would just take a lot of time, patience and perseverence probably and I would have him have a TA through MODG.
