Does a resource exist which lists picture books by character trait/virtue?
I'm having to get back to basics around here a bit and deal with some character issues, so I thought I would like to do some sort of relaxed unit studies during our family time.
I have For Instruction in Righteousness, which is a Protestant book that lists Bible verses and stories by areas that call for disciplinary action in the home (for example, anger, hitting, disobedience, etc.) It also lists some ideas of projects to do, discipline to hand out to offenders, etc. I have had this book for ages and never really used it, but just having flipped through it again, I think it is decent. I'd really like (obviously) to add a Catholic perspective, especially with some living literature.
Any ideas?

Which virtues/character traits are you wanting to look at?

We've tried here to do that in the past - gotten a little ways on it but never anything complete. I'll have to search for those old thereads.
Cay Gibson's Picture Perfect Childhood has a short section with someoptions for several different virtues - "Teaching Virtures Through Books".

Well there's the Jennie Bishop books.. The Princess and the Kiss and The Squire and the Scroll. Lovely stories.. but just that.. stories.. just very teachable stories.. for whatever age your children are.

I don't know of a list, but karen Santorum's book Everyday Graces is a nice collection of stories that reinforce specific virtues. There is also the Children's Book of Virtues by Willaim Bennet. Also a nice collection of stories arranged by virtue addressed.

Well... I have a few in mind.
love of neighbor
generosity/unselfishness
dealing with anger/peacemaking
obedience
respect for elders
(I have 5 boys age 8 and under. You can probably figure out why I picked these.)
I own the Santorum book and also The Children's Book of Virtues. (I really like the Ghenghis Khan story in that one for learning to control anger. Very boy oriented, too.) I really hope they're not still in a box in my garage, though. I'm not sure I'm ever going to finish moving in!

Angela, I thought I remembered that the P.A.C.E. Program had some book recommendations. I had a minute to check and they do! The program highlights the virtues of self-discipline, work, perseverance, faith/trust, compassion, friendship, courage, loyalty, responsibility, and honesty. Each section gives a reference list of stories from The Book of Virtues and The Moral Compass, as well as a short list of books related to the virtue. The books listed for K-3 are mostly picture books. There is also list of saints who either demonstrated the virtue or struggled to obtain it; that list might help you find picture books that feature those saints.
I'll have to post again to get a link up... On my phone!

Here it is:
Program for Achieving Character Education
Probably you could find it used for less. It really is a great reference book for virtue education from a Catholic perspective.

Remember our discussion on books about books?
Some of those books have listings in the back.

Not necessarily Catholic in origin but I have gotten wonderful recommendations for the Joy Berry books.
ETA: specifically the "Help Me Be Good" series. I find lots of her books at Goodwill/book resale shops

I see this book listed in the "Books about Books" thread, but I think it's worth repeating here. Last summer I read through "Books that Build Character: A Guide to Teaching Your Child Moral Values Through Stories" by William Kilpatrick and Gregory and Suzanne Wolfe. I just checked it out of the library and jotted down a decent-sized list.
Two that I included were recommended to encourage respect for our elders. They are
-Wilfred Gordon McDonald Partridge (by Mem Fox)
and
-Through Grandpa's Eyes (by Patricia MacLachlan)
For my oldest son (age 6), stories seem to be the hands-down best way to send a message about morals and values.

Stories about St. Moses the Black are great for examples of learning to control anger... he was dreadful! St. Paul and St. Jerome are good for that too.

Ordering gifts and trying to decide, would the Squire and the Scroll be more appropriate for a girl 7 or a boy 5?
And would a 10 yr old girl who LOVES princesses be too old for the Princess and the Kiss?
