At the suggestion of this forum I read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to my 7 year old daughter and we both enjoyed it very much. She noticed at the front of the book a whole list of books written by Ronald Dahl and she wants to dive into those as well, beginning with Charlie and the Glass Elevator.

Are there any Ronald Dahl books that should not be read due to content? I was never a big fan of Ronald Dahl, mainly because the teacher that introduced me to them in the 3rd grade with the book The Witches, was very cruel to me. (Long story short, I ended up losing weight, with stomach problems and had to go to counseling). So, I guess I sort of have negative feelings about the books that I have to work through. I read the back of the Matilda book at Barnes and Nobel and it said that Matilda has "stupid parents". I know you should not judge a book by the cover but... Are there any more good, quality Dahl books?

Personally, I don't like any of them ... but my son had a 4thgrade teacher who was very devout who read them all to them in class ... two ends of the spectrum!

Pre-read them all. They are very popular with some and very not with others.

I agree with pre-reading. We found James & the Giant Peach enjoyable, but I replaced words like 'stupid' with other words that I found more acceptable. I generally do not like how Dahl's books portray adults as being blubbering idiots, but otherwise many of his stories are rather fun. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is our favorite. I loved Matilda when I was a 3rd grader, but now as an adult, I have a hard time wrapping my mind around introducing it to my own kids.

Actually, I think that about a lot of things (TV shows I was allowed to watch, etc).

My mother read him to us as kids and I did not like them at all , they scared me . .I thought his books were creepy and as an adult when my dd was told to read The witches for school I was horrified .I was no where knowing I was a catholic yet either . something about his books just creeped me out . However that being said both my dd loved his books and I had to let go especially as it was the shool teaching using the books . I couldn't quite go in and make an arguement on a cut feeling these books feel creepy to me

I would agree to pre-read them first .
