Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi everyone!!
I may be posting this in the wrong forum, sorry. I was wondering what Beginners Bible you recommend. There are so many. Just wondering if you have found one that is better than the others. Our oldest child is 9 and our youngest is 2. Thanks so much!
Peace,
Kirsten

I like the Family Time Bible for very young children. The pictures are life-like, and the text reads fairly well, despite the simply language. For older read-aloud, I like Ergemeier's Bible Storybook. The text is rich and the content is definitely not "dumbed down". For read-alone, I use the Adventure Bible for Young Readers. It is the entire NIV Bible, with simplified language for young readers. The introduction explains very well how the language is adapted. My ds can read it independently, and his reading level is about 3rd/4th grade.

I would not recomment the Beginners Bible. The cartoon-like characters are very corny looking, with bubbly, nearly crossed eyes. If a children's Bible has pictures, I like them to look realistic. I do not want to give my children then impression that characters in the Bible were not real people.

Please note that these are not specifically Catholic children's Bibles.

HTH!

Hmnnn.. See, we like the Beginners Bible by Karyn Henley.

I bought it, originally, because it was recommended on Elizabeth's 4reallearning website. My daughter LOVED it. We would read 3 or 4 stories at one sitting.

Henley's Beginner's Bible is my 6 yo dd's favorite book. It's a nice size and he is able to read it by himself. The illustrations aren't worthy of being called art...they're definitely whimsical and cartoonish, but my ds has learned so much about the figures of the Bible from reading it.

If you're looking for better illustrations and more beautiful language, I would suggest The Golden Children's Bible. You can search inside it on Amazon. We use it for family read-alouds. It is the Bible recommended by Laura Berquist.

I also recently ordered a copy of the Bible for Young Catholics. I wanted a specifically Catholic Chilren's Bible and this was recommended to me by a dear friend. The illustrations are more realistic and it is an easier independent read than The Golden Children's Bible.

HTH

WOW so many choices. I will research all of these. I want something we can read aloud and then do some narrations with. I may have to get 2 different ones for the ages of my guys. Thanks so much for your responses.
Peace,
Kirsten

My 9 1/2 year old DD has been asking me to find a bible that has language that is easier for her to follow. She got 2 beautiful bibles for her First Holy Communion, but one is the New American and one is the RSV-CE. She doesn't want anything too child-like.

I've searched through these old threads and see many recommendations and even more questions about them. For those of you who have already gone down this path, could you share what bibles you selected and why?

I use the Breakthrough! Bible for Young Catholics with my middle school children.

It's a Catholic study Bible for middle schoolers which uses the Good News Translation.

The Good News Translation isn't the best translation from a stylistic point of view but it is easy to follow and the bible contains everything (unlike a Bible story book). I have found it very useful for bridging the gap between Bible story books and the more challenging language of my preferred translations.

You can buy this Breakthrough! Bible board game from them which includes the Breakthrough! Bible. The game breaks down the bible into periods which are similar to the Great Adventure timeline concentrating on the biblical people of each period.
