We've been reading a lot of FHC stories this year as part of dd's prep.

We're almost done with First Communion Days. We also have read King of the Golden City and Little Nellie.   I have True Stories of FIrst Communicants
ready to go next.... but now I am having second thoughts.

All of these book have good stories, but my issue is that, in so many of them, the child receives FHC and then DIES. Same with the story of Blessed Imelda.

So I'm looking for a set of stories that might be more modern... or perhaps more upbeat might be the right word?   Or just not ending in death...

I can agree with your POV, I'm finding the same thing.

My 2 girls are being baptized, First Holy Communion and Confirmation on April 7th, and later First reconciliation, and so many of the catholic readers are such ultimately sad endings.

I'd love to know if there were more current and 'happy ending' books.

I fear this might not be the most helpful suggestion because the book is long out of print, but it is a FANTASTIC little First Holy Communion book...and it has a happy ending!

This book is from the *FOR LITTLE CATHOLICS* series printed in the 50's. We've talked about this series before here.

First Holy Communion by Father Demetrius Manousos. Mine is a 1955 copyright. The story is about a brother and sister, Jack and Jenny, who are preparing to receive their First Holy Communion. It's highlighted by how proud Jack and Jenny's parents are of them in preparing to receive, and goes into some nice details on reception, after reception. It's a fantastic little book and ends happily as Jack and Jenny greet their parents after Mass, hugging them and saying how happy they are and how eager they are to receive Our Lord in Holy Communion again.

There is also a book on Confession, My Confession.

Also wanted to mention, if you have the Angel Food for Boys and Girls set, there are many, many stories that coordinate with receiving Holy Communion, from all 4 volumes. According to my spreadsheet, there are a total of 16 stories from this set that coordinate with Holy Communion. You can find more discussion about the Angel Food series as well as the spreadsheet I'm referring to on this thread.

Jen, is there anything in this book that is specifically from the old form of Confession? My family attends the Novus Ordo in English and that is all my son is familiar with. I was thinking of picking this up for him.

I had not yet bought First Communion Days but planned to. Would you still recommend it, Melinda? I know it has been recommended over and over on this board.

Do all the children die in it, or is it a mix? My son is sensitive, so I'd like to keep things positive, though of course going to Heaven is positive. :)

I don't have the Confession book yet, Amanda, but since these books were written in the 50's, all these books will reflect the norms of the older rite, what we now refer to as the Extraordinary Form. Though some things will look different to a child that attends the Novus Ordo exclusively (like the children kneeling at Communion rail to receive Holy Communion), the common instruction for making a good Confession, preparing our hearts to receive Our Lord, and other ideas like that do not change, and are presented beautifully in this series.

Thank you, Jen, for this recommendation! It sounds absolutely perfect for us as my two oldest (a boy and a girl) will likely receive their First Holy Communion at the same time. I hope I can find a copy...

The First Communion Days book is a mix... not every child dies at the end of every story. So far, two children have died out of the ten stories we've read.
I think the book has 12 stories.

Many stories have nuns and the children are able to attend daily mass every day by walking there- often by themselves. These are beautiful stories but definitely from a world that is very different from the one our children are growing up in.

I do wish someone would write some stories about children in our own times receiving FHC. There is a need.

ETA: It is so silly- I get nervous now each time we start a new story. Is this one going to make it?

The stories in Ten Eager Hearts (OOP) is a real gem!! each story contains incredibly inspiring stories of children preparing for their FHC and their prayers to Jesus after their first reception. Sticks in your mind and I believe early 1900s.

I remember Jenn telling me in a previous thread that the author also wrote True Stories for First Communicants and First Communion Days (both republished by Neumann Press).
