Some other threads have been hinting about this feastday, Christ the King. This is one of the harder feasts for me because this is one of the newer feasts of our Liturgical Year, established in 1925. I love following leads from older, rooted traditions. The other difficulty of this feast is that as Americans don't identify with the idea of honoring a king.
But since there are no set traditions imaginations can run wild and creativity can be put to work. So it could be a positive thing!
What my family would do is sing the song "An Army of Youth" by Daniel Lord and have a procession. We later had our own school do this Christ the King Procession. The first picture on this page I mounted and we would decorate our bulletin board with red material, a glitter crown above the picture and "King of Kings" around it. Our meal would be festive, "Fit for a King."
Thinking of what it means for Jesus to be our King. he must be the King of our world, nations, familes, but most importantly the kingdom of God is in each one of us. Jesus needs to be the center of our lives!
Some images, Scriptural references for discussion:
Jesus is the King foretold by Isaiah 9:5-6
Suitable music, "For Unto Us A Son Is Born" from Handel's Messiah.
The passion and Jesus and Pilate: "Are you the King of the Jews?" Scourging, crown of thorns, mocking him as a king. Then on his cross: "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews."
Matthew 25:31: Son of Man coming into glory
Revelation 19:11-16 "King of King and Lord of Lords"
Suitable Music: Hallelujah Chorus from Handel's Messiah
The Glorious Mystery of the rosary, the Ascension, is related to this feast.
Crafts like crowns, fancy meals, maybe what royalty would eat (pheasant anyone?) come to mind.
I would think that Enthronement of the Sacred Heart would be appropriate for this feast, as we are enthroning Christ as King of our homes.

If not enthronement, an act of consecration, such as the one below is appropriate to say as a family:
Act of Consecration of the Human Race to the Sacred Heart of Jesus
Most sweet Jesus, Redeemer of the human race, look down upon us humbly prostrate before thy altar. We are yours, and yours we wish to be; but to be more surely united with you, behold each one of us freely consecrates himself today to your most Sacred Heart. Many indeed have never known you; many too, despising your precepts have rejected you. Have mercy on them all, most merciful Jesus, and draw them all to your Sacred Heart. Be King, O Lord, not only of the faithful who have never forsaken you, but also of the prodigal children who have abandoned you; grant that they may quickly return to their father's house, lest they die of wretchedness and hunger. Be King of those who are deceived by erroneous opinions, or whom discord keeps aloof, and call them back to the harbor of truth and unity of faith, so that soon there may be but one flock and one Shepherd. Grant, O Lord, to your Church assurance of freedom and immunity from harm; give peace and order to all nations, and make the earth resound from pole to pole with one cry : Praise to the divine heart that wrought our salvation; to it be glory and honor for ever. Amen.

I printed out the Litany to Christ the King from Catholic Culture. I also use Open Wednesday weekly and there is some good stuff there for Sunday's feast.

Jenn,
My introduction to celebrating the liturgical year at home with young children began serendipitously on a Feast of Christ the King. We got home from Mass and I remembered a song from a kid's Psalty's Praise music tape we had.
Dh and I had our oldest dd's, ages 1 and 3 at the time I think, make construction paper crowns decorated with aluminum foil "gems". We then made some capes out of fabric in our dress-up box and found a toy that resembled a scepter. We lined the girls up with capes, crowns, and scepter and they marched around the house to a very upbeat song that said,
"Follow the leader
Jesus Christ the King.
Follow the leader
Everybody sing . . ."
They had a wonderful time and it was so simple! Thanks for bringing back a great memory.

One little thing we do is google images of whatever the Feast day is -- for instance, "Christ the King" -- if you click on images, you get all the google images of this. After previewing and selecting about a dozen or so (you do have to previw as sometimes a google search comes up with some pretty odd things ).
I then let one of my littles choose which picture will be our desktop on the computer -- since the computer is in the dining room, they see the picture for at least a week before the feast -- even the older ones ask about it! It's a great way to get a discussion of the event -- whether it's a particular Saint, Holy Day or just a general "time of year".
My little ones fight over who gets to pick the picture -- so sometimes we change pictures mid-way through -- which also stirs conversation.

I love this feast! It is a fitting and triumphant end to the church year. Our parish makes it a really beautiful Mass with a crowning and lots of gold in the decorating. Some of my favorite hymns are sung that day.
These links and ideas are fantastic, I'm looking forward to some things we can do at home to continue the celebration.

My dc love the song
Soon and very soon we are going to see the King!
We have been singing that after our nightly prayers this week.
I have some gold crown paper so we will make crowns and have a feast.
