Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am looking for ideas/ suggestions.

A group of us at our church were thinking about starting a scripture study based on Catholic art. I guess it would be more of a Catholic art study based on the scripture - now that I write this...

Anyway, that got me thinking, If I wanted to do that, do any of you have any ideas/ resources I could use?

My thought is to meet 1/2x a month for about a hour, study a piece of art work and learn more about that piece how it relates to us, and then maybe read the Bible passage related to that piece in more of a Lectio Divina format...

Could this/ would this work you think?
Thanks

Bev

You may want to look at a Magnificat subscription. It usually features beautiful (usually religious) artwork and an article about it including critical analysis.

I don't have any study ideas in particular, but I do have a set of art prints you could use to get you started. They correlate with the stories in the New Catholic Picture Bible but are NOT those images: Bible Timeline Cards

Catholic Heritage Curriculum sells something called Art Masterpieces: A Liturgical Collection. I've not seen this IRL, but the product description sounds as if it might include some good choices of pictures. Your idea sounds so interesting!

Peace,
Nancy

The Art Masters Enhance Old/New testament set contains 46 five by eight inch laminated prints with a accompanying book and is meant for grades 7 to 12.

I have their junior high confirmation package and the material would be well suited to an adult study group- lots of good information and thought provoking questions both artistic and religious. I've learned a lot from it.

That looks really awesome.

I've been trying to present different masterpiece art to show my son, but not exactly study, but as a contemplation of different Gospels of the day or the Easter season. It's been wonderful. There are so many masterpieces available online, with a color printer it's been a great addition for our home education.

I have found Sister Wendy Beckett's views very helpful in studying art.

I think this is a lovely idea. We've tried a lot of different things for art study but the best has really been books from the library. Most libraries have a collection of art books (which aren't taken out very often because they are large and heavy --or so our librarian told me) that have positively beautiful images in them. You do have to be careful about which ones you choose but for what you are looking to do I think it would be a good option.

Your idea is truly beautiful!

This website has always been a favorite for finding religious imagery. It's an absolute treasure trove of religious artwork. The neat thing is you can search by Biblical subject or text, making it easier to narrow your search for art based on specific topics or Scripture verses. They also link to outside sources for individual pieces, some containing articles on the artist, history or subject matter of a particular work of art:

If you and your group are anywhere near Toledo,OH a trip to the cathedral might be worthwhile.....there are many incredible images, some based on Old and New Testament Scriptures that correlate with one another. Here’s a web address:

Thank you all for your wonderful suggestions and ideas. You all seem to know so much more than me. We are still working our way through planning for this, but I now have some useful suggestions and resources to pass on.

Thanks again

Bev

I liked her so much I bought all the video's from her series from PBS. They are fabulous! Did you know St. Thomas Beckett is her ancestor? If you still have a VHS player you can really get a deal!

Ok, so I can make a link, but I can't do the quote thing yet.....

I was going to recommend Signs & Symbols in Christian Art by George Ferguson for a really good overview of symolism in art. Probably no help at all bible study wise, but it is really informative and helps you really "see" what is in the art.

Personally, I am trying to find a really good heavy book holder so that I can put the art books on it for display - any tips.

I really enjoy this book as well. It has been so helpful for us!

YES!!!! I have just spent the last 6 months hunting down book holders that were 1) inexpensive and 2) able to hold tall or heavy books for displaying! I found them!!!!! The drawback is that the shipping for the site I found them on is high...but it was so great to finally find what I was looking for I had to link you!

I'm going to try to link you directly, but this site is notorious for just redirecting to a generic page...if that happens, I'll give you specific names to search under on the site.

Economical Wire Book Easels at Demco. My favorites are:

** Large All Purpose Easel (C) - this is a great book easel! Will easily hold a substantial book upright very nicely. The lip on the front holds a book open to a particular place -- GREAT FEATURE! My son likes this book easel because it holds a book open upright in front of him nicely while he does his copywork, or while he's doing his keyboarding/typing practice.

** Large Folding Wire Easel (G) - I like this one a lot as well! It's perfect because the back folds up to provide support for a very tall book!

The plastic molding over the frame gives the easel a bit of "grip" so they don't slide around and are quite sturdy. I have a couple of the others options listed at this site, but these two are a couple of my favorites! They also work very well for displaying a piece of art for art study.

I can't tell you how long I hunted for something affordable like this...so when I saw your question I was so excited to give you some options to consider!
