Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We've decided to take a break from IEW next year for ds 12. I would like to do a year of creative writing with him. Does anyone have any suggestions on curricula? Has anyone planned their own creative writing program?

TIA

God Bless,

Anita

It depends on how much he likes to write! :-)

"Write with the Best" is very good, it uses pieces of classic, interesting literature (think "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" "Wind in the Willows" etc) to prompt students. Its also fairly inexpensive.... but then, EVERYTHING is inexpensive after IEW!

As an English teacher (and homeschooler for 12 years now) I really prefer having students "model" their writing on great writing, it frees them up from having to start from scratch with ideas, plots, characters, etc.

Why not add a year of "creative reading" as well, so he has a head full of good literature to draw from? The best writers are the most well-read ones, IMHO.

Peace,
Macmom

He loves to write. He's been writing stories since he learned how to form letters. He loves to read, as well.

I'll look into Writing with the Best. It sounds good. We read a lot of classics already, so it sounds like it would fit in well. Thanks.

We really like Bravewriter. We've used The Writer's Jungle and some of Julie's online classes. My kids have learned lots about creative, descriptive writing through and have made some friends through the classes too.

We have lots of threads about Bravewriter. Linking one here that has links to others.

Didn't realize I was logged in as administrator. That was me posting about Bravewriter. If you wanted to plan your own program, you could use the writing prompts at Bravewriter along with the ideas and suggestions on her blog (about teatime, poetry, shakespeare, movies as jumping off points, etc) and that might be a good start without buying her manual.

As your son loves creative writing your task is so much easier Really for a child who loves creative writing your main task is to help him brainstorm and give constructive feedback.

My dd14 is a creative writer and is currently writing a novel, he has written over 100 pages thus far. This has been an ongoing project for about a year now and he couldn't be happier. His handwriting, spelling and slowly his punctuation have improved incredibly. My input is to edit his work after he has done an edit. Not only do we discuss punctuation (his biggest issue) but tigheter sentences etc.

Another idea is to form a writing club. Once a week we have a couple of other families over and the children have tried all sorts of writing styles.
the mothers giggle as in the group they will try new areas they won't at home. If you are interested and after ideas I can share more details later. Writing club has been such a blessing to all of the children, one of the best endeavours we have undertaken to foster their love of writing and progress.

This looked interesting:

But, I admit I haven't looked into it much! (It's not where I'm at right now- we are working on academic essays!)

Peace,
Macmom

Thanks so much for all the suggestions. Lots to think about. I really appreciate it. My ds is excited about the possibility of writing a novel. We'll see.

God Bless,

Anita

At the Cathy Duffy website, I came across something called Story Starters that looks interesting.

There was a creative writing game that I used to have bookmarked, but I think I lost it with my last computer virus. If I can find the information, I'll pass it on.
