Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We have a "Signing Time" explosion here, with my dd3 and dd5, that we've started to practice reading fingerspelling, and have visited the ASL Browser to learn more signs.

I don't want to waste the momentum and interest, and if you know of any resource for signing prayers (mealtime prayer or Hail Mary or Our Father), do share. Or if you've tried any of the videos from the National Catholic Office for the Deaf, will you share a review?

Thanks so much,
Diane

Diane, what a great request! My girls and I have been wanting to learn to sign our prayers ever since ASL became a big part of our life. So far, we haven't found any good sources. We have learned some religous signs here and there, mainly from this link, and we sign along to our prayers as best we can, but I have been wanting some REAL instruction in it. I was recently thinking I should check out the offerings of the Captioned Media Program, a deaf/HOH lending library my son qualifies to use. I'll give their holdings a look and let you know if I come across anything.

Here are some of the links I have collected (just haven't found that PERFECT link, you know?)--

Hymns in ASL--this is a Mormon site, but there are some familiar hymns there, like America the Beautiful and Christmas carols. Each hymn opens in Windows Media Player. The pace is fast and it's hard to break it down to individual signs.

Our Father in ASL--a YouTube video. Sign only, no spoken words, so you have to watch VERY carefully!

Gallaudet's list of religious sign resourcesGallaudet's list of religious sign resources--there used to be a link to a video of a priest signing the Our Father, but the link seems to be dead now.

Our Father ASL gloss--This one may be the most useful, because it translates the Our Father into ASL, and you can then look up individual signs at the ASL Pro site I linked above, or at the Animated Dictionary of Religious Signs, which the gloss page links to. And THAT site includes a link to the entire New Testament in ASL! You can type in a verse and a video will pop up. Might work for the Lord's Prayer and part of the Hail Mary... (I need to upgrade my version of Real Player before we can view them.)

Of course probably the best resource is a real ASL speaker--if there is a signed Mass near you, ask the interpreter to teach you! I'm sure he or she would be delighted. (One of these days I will get around to taking my own advice!)

(Oh, and since you're in Virginia--if you're anywhere near Staunton, you've got a great resource in the VA School for the Deaf & Blind. Is the Hampton Roads campus still open?)

Thanks so much, Lissa! Most of my resources are from your blog.

I just checked the diocesan website and found a list of signed Masses near me (in No. VA). I can just imagine my girls' faces when they see their first signed Mass!

I'm also probably closer to Gallaudet University than to Staunton, so if the girls want to keep this up, I'm sure I'll be checking their resources.

I await your reviews and will keep myself glued to your blog for updates!

Thanks again,
Diane

We used to go to a signed Mass in Staunton, and my girls always wanted to sit in the front row for the best view. Ironically, that was before Steven was born! During my pregnancy with him, I had hip trouble and couldn't sit in the car for the 40-minute trip over the mountain to that parish. We switched to a Cville parish and hardly ever made it back to St. Francis in Staunton after that. But those signed Masses sure helped prepare us for embracing Stevie's hearing loss, when he came along!

One more thought--when Stevie was first diagnosed, a Gallaudet grad student came to our house for a few weeks to tutor us in ASL. She was interning w/ Early Intervention, but you might be able to find a student to give you some private lessons.

Glad my site has been useful!
