Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm thinking ahead to next year for my son. Kindergarten has been very (maybe too) relaxed. We're doing MUS Primer, Little Stories for Little Folks and reading whatever books interest him. I feel like he has learned a lot about things he is interested in (trains, planets, dinosaurs). What do I add in for 1st grade? I want to start Story of the World at some point, should I do that next year? What other subjects do I need to work on?

My 1st grade son is doing Story of the World this year (along with dd who is a 2nd grader) and they both love it. We also do Spelling, Language Lessons (by Jessie Bauer), MUS, Faith and Life Relg, Handwriting, and also art and music. We just started using the Language Lessons this year and love it. It's a great book. Oh yeah, for Science we are studying an animal a week. After reading books on an animal, they do a page in their notebook. I hope that helps.

I think it depends on your ds and what he is ready for. When my dd was in Gr.1, she had been reading for 3 yrs. already, so she did spelling, First Language Lessons, history (SOTW) and informal science. My ds, on the other hand, who will be in Gr.1 next year, cannot read yet and has no desire to do this. So next year for him will be just focusing on math, reading and handwriting. He will sit in on history but only because his older sister is doing it. I won't expect anything from him, only listening to the reading.

If your ds is a great reader, then you can probably add a bit more. If reading is slow going for him, then I would continue with the laid back plan and just focus on the basics.

Blessings,
Julia

Dont forget the power of picture books is still very big for this age group. You could toss is a FIAR book every month or so.

My ds (now 3rd gr.) love making a very simple Bible History Timeline in Notebook form during his 1st grade year. (I think this was from CHC, but we kind of did our own style and didn't really follow the plans other than the Bible reading schedule) We also used the Beginner's Bible for reading practice, it's gem

HTH! Blessings!
