Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi-

I am looking for some creative Kindergarten ideas for my daughter next year! I used Seton materials for one of my sons and I am currently using a lot of CHC things for my older children.

This year I have ejoyed many pre-school units using the Little Saints program, One Year With God, and Cay's Catholic Mosaic. (Love your book, Cay!)

I am not "naturally" creative so I enjoy having a guide for some ideas like Little Saints...

Just looking for some feedback on any materials that you ladies may have used and ejoyed.

Thank you so much.

P.S. I am so inspired by many of your blogs!

I don't know if I answer for you Tiffany, but here's what we do that has been sparking creativity in my sons....

We use Mother of Divine Grace. She has the kids memorize poems (and then illustrate them in a book once they've memorized them), read the Bible (retell and illustrate that as well). We also use Elizabeth's Real Learning for suggestions as well. I have Five In A Row, but haven't used it that much except for a reference for another book list.

I also have a ton of craft supplies in lower drawers that they can use at all times. So when we finish a book, I often find my son (and now his brother) wanting to make his own book and color it, paint it, paste pictures to it, etc.. They also sit at the kitchen table and draw what they see flying by (obviously these are not very good drawings, but I don't think that's the point).

So we're not doing tons of creative things -- but doing what Laura Berquist and Elizabeth suggest definitely seems to be sparking creativity.

Thank you MaryAn! I have looked at MODG before so I will look again. This is probably a silly question but what is Elizabeth's Real Learning? Do you mean this forum?

I also like your craft drawer idea for making books. It reminded me of how my other children loved to "make books" at that age.

Tiffany -

Elizabeth wrote a book called Real Learning. On the front page (before you enter the forum) there's a link to it at the top of the page. It's fabulous!

Hi Tiffany, you've probably seen them already, but many of the Preschool Learning Corner Units I have done with my 4 yo ds can be considered Kindergarten work. They are: Tigers

Squirrels

Owls

I also really like Homeschool Share or picture book studies that are similar to FIAR units!!

HTH a bit to get you started. There are so many great ideas here, also check out the Rabbit Trail Forum here!!

We love Kindergarten it's tons of fun!! I can't reccommend Elizabeth's Book enough, if you haven't read it yet, buy it!!! I attribute most of my home schooling successes to having read her book and assimilated the information into what works for our family, it's a MUST HAVE for any Catholic Home Educator

Good to see you here

Hi Tiffany,

How nice to see you on the boards. Have you looked at Five In A Row. I have used this and recommend this program to all my friends, and Chari is using it this year with ds5.

God Bless,
Robynn

Hi Robynn-

Good to hear from you and thank you for the note! I hope all is well with you and family!
I've heard quite a bit about Five In A Row but have never pursued it....I assume there is a website?

God Bless your day!

Tiffany,

There is a website. We have used Before Five in a Row and Vol. 1. It adds a little variety into our curriulum.
Last month we read Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening. They showed a lot of animal tracks in the book so we went to the library and checked out books on identifying animal tracks. You can simply read and discuss the stories or you can leap into a unit study!!!
I am using this with my ds6 and the others will often join in. You could have your older son read the stories to the kids and then do activities together... There are a lot of possibilities.

                                   Jennifer
P.S. Good to see some Mt. Shasta campers here.

If you search the message boards (click on the search button at the top right), you will find much here about Five in a Row, and links to their website and message boards.
