This may need to go in the Language Arts forum, but for those of you who try to stick pretty close to CM's teachings, do you *DO* Spelling with your children all the way through to High School( for those of whom this applies) or do you have a point where you know they are done with official spelling, or perhaps there is a different way? Both my older two dc are excellent spellers, and we have always used the lovely CHC Spellers, but now I'm at a point where I just don't feel it is necessary for either one of them as they are GREAT spellers, thanks be to God and I don't want to hinder them with uneccessary workbooks!
Sorry this is a little long for a pretty simple question. How do you all do spelling in your house
Appreciate any and all responses!

Meredith,
Our boys are quite enjoying Spelling Time. I think I actually read about it on this forum (so sorry I forget who originally posted it).
I have one child for whom spelling does not come naturally. I ordered The Phonetic Zoo for him.
Blessings,

We use the Spelling Time for my 2nd grader. He loves it and it is the first thing he wants to do everyday. He starts it all on his own. He's excited to do it.
We do Spelling Power with my older kids and only do the testing for 5 minutes so it doesn't take much time. What I like about Spelling Power is that it is self correcting any mispelled words right away and the kids only work on the words they spelled incorrectly. We have the activity task cards and have used them but lately they see more dust than children.

Congratulations on having wonderful spellers I wish I could say the same. We didn't DO spelling and I now bitterly regret it So my highschoolers are working hard to make up lost ground.
As the goal is to have excellent spellers and your dc have reached that point then I can't see the need for them to continue using 'spellers' you can now free up that time for them to use in another area.
Whatever we do/use are TOOLS in achieving our GOAL.
To answer your question of what do we do: we use an old (1957) English book written by Schonell and use his approach. Actually I've wondered about posting his lists up somewhere as I'm sure they are probably past copyright. We also heavily rely on dictation.

Erin, thanks for your response and yes I think this is the direction I'm heading, as it covers both. Why do BOTH spelling and dictation and vocabulary, blah blah blah
Keep 'em coming!!

I really really love Sequential Spelling. We do this for 15 minutes 3x a week. Everyone has benefitted, but my son non-reading son has finally become a reader this year and I attribute it in large part to the spelling emphasis this year.

I will be honest, I think that vocabulary is an American thing we have never done vocabulary and yet my dc have an amazing vocab which I attribute to all their wonderful readings and I admit I expect a high level of acceptable conversation, I will instantly 'pounce' on spoken grammatical errors and do use an extensive vocabularly myself. I have my mother to bless for that
Make sure that you pick a high level selection for your dictation and then you have covered all areas.

We have done spelling off and on. I used Spelling Power for a while and really liked it. After reading about how dictation and copywork takes care of that I stopped using it but it really hasn't work for us. At least I don't t hink it has. My dd (13) thinks she is a poor speller and I don't have much to compare her too. She does well on standardized test but not perfect. So she asked me to do spelling this year. We are using this online course
Spelling course. So far is working well. We will see about long term effects! lol
Regarding vocabulary- I stopped doing vocabulary since I stopped using SL. They used to recommend Wordly Wise. Sometimes I wonder if I should have continue since my dd feels that her vocabulary lacks. So I might try some vocabulary workbooks for next year.

We use Spelling Power from 3rd or 4th grade on. Before that I think spelling gets covered pretty well with a short bit of phonics each day. When doing Spelling Power, I break up the "Group" lists so that we only spell about 10 words each day. Even with re-writing corrected words, this takes under 10 minutes. In deciding when to stop spelling as a particular subject, I base this on how well the child does on the Spelling Scales in SP. DS stopped *doing* Spelling in 7th grade; DD14 is still having daily Spelling words in 9th grade. I agree, Meredith, about stopping when a certain mastery level is achieved. It would not be very CM to continue beating a dead horse.
Peace,
Nancy

This is just my two cents, Meredith, so take it for what it's worth (about two cents) ... but, I think that if they are spelling well at this point, you could drop any formal curriculum, provided you're keeping an eye on their writing and correcting/reinforcing through that.
Mine aren't in high school yet, of course, but with my oldest, I've seen her become a good speller (for the most part -- she's very sloppy in letter-writing, casual writing, etc.) through her writing and I don't see the need for the workbooks now.

We don't use a spelling curriculum but we have in the past. We used Spelling Power for a while and it just seemed that I was calling out lists of words they already knew (even though we took the placement tests and were working in the right section of the book). My oldest isn't a natural speller, but copywork and written narrations seem to do the trick just as well as lists that are memorized and then soon forgotten. Latin has helped a lot actually. My 9 year old spelled a pretty difficult word in English recently and told me she could do it because she knew the Latin root and derivative.
