Cindy, I am so happy to see your name listed as moderator of this forum because I know it is destined to be one of my favorites. Every January/February, when the winter doldrums begin to set in a bit, I find myself returning to Charlotte Mason's original writings for inspiration. I sometimes miss the ideal, but I love to follow the Charlotte Mason model. This is the time of year when I remind myself that short lessons are better than long ones and children need a steady diet of great literature and ideas to feed their hearts.

At the moment, I am trying to remember to incorporate more fine arts in our daily routine and get the children outside more even if it's cold. Today, I sent them out with the instruction, "Bring me back an owl pellet." They had fun playing detective, looking at the bottom of trees for any sign of the owl we hear hooting outside our house at night, and I was glad to see them getting some fresh air and exercise while examining nature up close. They did not find any owl pellets, but when the children finally came in, they scoured the shelves until they found a nature book with information on owls and owl pellets (and happened upon "The Kids' Wildlife Book" by Warner Shedd). I love when they are able to read about something they've experienced or experience something they've read about. It was a nice moment and one I hope to see repeated even in the dead of winter.

Hi Alice!

Oh, what a great idea to return to the CM writings. I agree that it really does help to pick up Cm for a lift of spirit. I find I am highlighting and underlining and thinking how I need to remember these simple but profound ideas and apply them in our lives.

Your owl pellet search is a wonderful example. I can just see the kids out looking around--- Charlotte would smile, I know.

I love the Kid's Wildlife book. If it is the one I have... I can't remember the author.. Is the the one that is colorful - for ages 6-10 or so with projects like making a racoon mask? I think that book got more use than any other science/nature book, execpt our Animal Encyclopedia.

I am so glad you are exctied to discuss CM's writings. I need to get my volumes out and get going. I'm glad I'm moderating too.. it will cause me to read them more and maybe even keep up with the monthly meetings here in Houston..

Yes, that's the one! The mask is on page 31! I picked up this book at a nature center, and, like you, I am amazed at how often we return to it. The book is especially practical because it is so "user friendly" for kids and appeals to all ages. This is important for us because I am always trying to combine subjects to include as many of my children as possible.
