What do you do when your 3 (almost 4) year old daughter doesnt' want you to read stories to her???? My son would, and still does, bring me book after book to read to him. My dd, on the other hand, wants nothing to do with stories unless it's bedtime. Then she wants me to read Cinderella or Snow White... and that's it.
So, what would you ladies suggest? I'm very frustrated with her... maybe it shows. I don't know. How do you get a child to love books... I didn't have to try with my older child. Aaahhh, they're all different, aren't they?
Any and all suggestions welcome!

Does she like to look at books by herself?
My littles get to stay up a half hour to look at books in bed. Those who aren't quiet and aren't looking at books have their light turned off.
Would she like to go to the library? Does she enjoy books on tape? How about oral storytelling?
I guess I would just read Cinderella for the 500th time and look for different versions!

I don't really have an answer - except that my daughter went through phases with books. Sometimes for a month at a time she just didn't want me to read to her. She grew out of it, thankfully, and we read all the time now. My son had no interest in books at all for the first two years - and then we found "I Love Trucks" and he loves that whole series. It also helped when I would let him sit in between my daughter and I while I read to her. ???? Sorry I couldn't help more.

Thanks Jennifer, it's just nice to know that my daughter isn't the only one - hopefully she'll grow out of it just as your daughter did.
Nicole, we go to the library every 2-3 weeks. She picks books out and then doesn't want to read them when we get home. I'll try the books on tape - I ordered some Jim Weiss CDs for Christmas. Thanks for the suggestions.

Just a thought -- my son didn't want me to read to him much (and at almost six is still requires a little coaxing) but I think he just sees books as something I do with his brother. Like that's his brother's territory -- not his. It is very hard getting him to understand that books are for everyone.
Somethings that work are buying or getting from the library books and keeping a book basket that is just for him. For awhile they just sat in there, but now he gets the hang of it and likes it. Also, he likes to listen to the books on CD while riding in the car.
Sometimes a shared book that everyone is listening to takes the pressure off.
It does get better and she may be someone who gets really attached to just a few things -- more select and less grazing.
Also,You may not value princesses, but she does and that's something you'll have to explore a little with her to gain her trust so that when you suggest something she knows you value her joy.
I hope that helps.

My eldest daughter Agnes absolutely *would not allow me to read a single book to her* during a 6 month phase when she was about three. I was beside myself, because I'd always dreamt of raising a literature loving family! She was actually known to hide books on the side of the refrigerator--I kid you not!
Then, one day, she saw the book "Dance at Grandpa's" and became interested in the pictures. I asked if she would like me to read it and--miracle of miracles--she said yes. We read it about a dozen times that night and haven't stopped since! She became my youngest and most avid reader and writer. To this day, she is the child in our family most in love with books.
So, I guess the message is, don't worry about it. Your sweetie will probably come around!
