Hi, I'm new to this site. I need help/advice on how to convince my husband to homeschool. I grew up going to a Catholic school my entire life and really wanted that for my children. Well, there is not Catholic school anywhere near us. I would like to homeschool now, and my husband is not real thrilled w/the idea. I have a few friends who homeschool and I think it's great, they actually referred me to this site. Does anyone have any advice on how to convince my husband that this is the best thing for our kids? Please help!!!
Thanks in advance,
Angela, wife to Dave, mom to Brett (8), Ryan (6) and Hallie (1)

I am a newbie too. In fact this will be our first year homeschooling!
I definately heard the call to HS before my DH. It has been on my mind since my oldest was about 4. However, DH just wasn't convinced so we did private school for 2 years. Well I kept praying about it and I discussed it gently with my husband every once in a while and low and behold, this past winter it became a real possibility. So here I am!
There was not one specific thing that convinced DH to give it a try. Just lots time praying, gently discussing it as an option and also meeting some wonderful HS families. For my DH to meet and know other HS families who were like us as far as goals and faith etc. was very important. I do think it wasn't me telling him how great these families were, he had to get to know them himself and talk to the other dads one on one. These things happend very naturally.
Continue to pray that God's will be done. Be very gentle and just talk about it every few months or so. Be willing to consider perhaps this is not His plan, your DH has his reasons for not being interested in it, have you discovered what those are? I found that one of my DH's fears is the burden on me would harm my marriage relationship. That was a big stumbling block for him.
God Bless you!

I ditto much of what Tracy said....I, too, was ready to homeschool long before my husband was. However, now he's completely onboard. Now it's me who'll get cold feet from time to time and he talks me back into it! I know this isn't any advice but I thought it might offer hope that the situation can come around.
Good luck & I'll keep your family in my prayers.

We've homeschooled from the beginning. Dh was always willing to give it a try, but wasn't as confident as I was. We discussed the pros and cons to homeschooling, but what I think eased his mind most was seeing the success the kids were having once we actually started (Maybe your dh would agree to a trial year?) and also meeting other homeschooling families.

Dh and I decided to homeschool together - but this was only after I read John Holt's "Teach Your Own" and read aloud the best parts to dh.
The clear commonsense writing appealed to him - but my reading it aloud was the impetus.
Perhpas sharing sections of inspiring homeschool booksmight help, and at least provide a basis for more discussion - maybe something Like 'Teach Your Own" or "Family Matters: Why Homeschooling makes Sense" by David Gutterson.
( Both books have male authors )

Hi Angela,
I didn't see this message until today.
Tell him Johnathan was homeschooled from 3rd grade through high school. He is doing really well. He scored really high on the ASVAB, graduated number 1 in his OSUT class, and has earned two AAM's already and he has only been stationed in KS since April.
If you want to talk to me about it, PM me and I will give you my phone number.
If you don't mind, I will get your address from John and send you Catholic Homeschooling by Dr. Mary Kay Clark. It is the book that convinced me to homeschool WAY back when.
Blessing,
Krisann

Isn't it funny how husbands thousands of miles apart are so alike? I read aloud to my husband when I want to express a viewpoint that coincides with mine, but that is not expressly mine.
Reading aloud helped my husband, but the actual practice and years of struggling through homeschooling and prayer are what convinced my husband. Once he was completely convinced (and it took several years because my oldest boy became a bit troublesome especially at the beginning of the year for a few years), we all were able to relax more and love this style of life.
God bless and we'll pray for you!

My husband wasn't convinced that homeschooling was the way to go in the beginning either. I think that part of it was that our John is special needs and since dh is a doctor, it was second nature for him to think that we needed some kind of specialist or expert. But when the "experts" weren't doing what John needed, he agreed to let me try.
He went from agreeing to let me try to being a big promoter of homeschooling to all his patients.
A lot of friends of mine that homeschool tell similar stories about taking a while to convince their husbands.
