Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Just saw this new unit study at Amanda Bennett's site:
Scrapbooking Unit Study.

Neat!

I haven't seen it yet but we've used several of Bennett's units: Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, Lighthouses, sailing ships, and American government.

Her unit are all Christian based and we haven't run into any anti-Catholic materials within them.

Thanks for the link. I love scrapbooking and my boys have been bugging me to teach them. I think this may be the perfect way to do just that

Thanks for posting the link Cay. I had seen a couple of her unit studies for sale on cathswap and wondered if they were any good.
As for scrapbooking, I am SO far behind on my pictures but I've decided this year we are just going to have one day a month designated as scrapping day. I don't have a place to leave the stuff out easily and once we get it out, we don't want to stop working, so we'll just make it an all day thing once a month and call it art, and play some nice classical music in the background, too!

Another way you can incorporate scrapbooking into your school work is to keep an Activities Scrapbook. One scrapbook page for any field trip you do, sports activities, plays your kids are in,camps, anything that is educational or even social (since 'socialization' seems to be a preoccupation of many. We've been doing this for years and it's so easy, not fancy at all and a fun way to keep a scrapbook AND feel like you're -keeping your portfolio up to date. You can let the kids do the page, you can do them together, simply throw in the pictures, a copy of any program, awards or certificates received, label and date the page. Sample topics from our summer Activities book would include things like "Shakespeare Camp", "Summer Swim League", "Blueberry Picking", "FSU Strings Camp", "Summer Horse Activities", "Studying Crustaceans at the Aquarium", "Family Reunion" (hey, that counts as social activities, doesn't it???),"July Fencing Competition", "'Twelfth Night' at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival", "Field Trip (ok, a picnic)to the Indian Mounds" and so on and so forth, yadda yadda yadda.

We would probably stand to benefit from looking at the Bennet Unit Study... no doubt we could beef up our skills somewhat . In the meantime, though, this "Activity Book" is a guiltfree way of making scrapbooking part of your home schooling

PS I forgot to mention Service Activities. Muy importante. Be sure and include any service projects your kids do, and date them. Again, serves as a nice scrapbook AND documentation of activities. I have also noticed that these Activities Books are a very effective way of quelling the fears of homeschooling naysayers. Whenever my relatives or others start to harp on homeschooling, I simply pull out the The Book. They either get sick of looking at the pictures OR they Get The Message (generally the latter ).

Karen have you ever seen the storage materials from places like URL=http://www.cropperhopper.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCA TS&Category=2]Cropper Hopper[/URL]

You can keep all your supplies portable and not feel limited by your space. I had a similar tote from Creative Memories which was a huge boon to me when we lived in military housing. When I outgrew this my dh and I converted a tiny closet into my scrap space. We put a slab of remnant countertop as a work desk and I could shut partially finished projects if need be.

Along the line of Rabbit Trails, one goal I have for this year is to try digital scrapbooking.

Has anyone tried this yet?

I know, I do have my stuff in a couple of file totes, etc that are easy to move around, but I still like to do more than just a page or two if I take the trouble to get it out on the table. I already have a sewing room filled with fabric and machines, plus knitting bags scattered around the house in various locations, so I really can't ask for a dedicated scrapping area, too!    It's not as high a priority for me as sewing, so I'm not ready to give up any room in there, either. But I think doing a whole day of it, just once a month would be fun for all of us and something to look forward to for the kids, too.

No way to write this without it looking like a shameless blog plug but gosh I hate to see people pay for what you get free! I uploaded my scrapbooking how to's for Donna Marie today complete with enough links to keep a person busy for a loooong time. <g> (Or maybe that was just how long it took to load them lol!)

I don't know what else the Bennett study would have but I would be hardpressed to guess what else a person could need. If I missed anything significant, holler at me and I will see what I can do!

Kim (the cheap cheap cheap ; ))

Ok I figured out what I was missing - the historical references. Here they are:

Mark Twain scrapbooks
LMM Scrapbooking
MT links
history of scrapbooks

Kim - thanks for the links. I book marked the Mark twain sites as we jst began a literature study on Tom Swayer. I think I will try to incorporate scrapbooking into this study to make it more fun for the boys. They are always after me to teach them scrapbooking so here is a great way to begin!!!
