Okay, Ladies! I'm sitting here trying to get ready for school --- DS is only 3 so things are really laid back, we won't be starting until after Labor Day. I don't know much about Charlotte Mason but I do know that she recommended NOT using watered-down versions of the Bible for children. I think that makes a lot of sense, but I'm struggling with what to do with our son.
We have quite a few "children's Bibles" that really aren't that great. What do you use for children this young? It seems that the actual Bible might be too much, at least in many instances!
I want to do a short "religion class" (more like a set time for faith formation) in the mornings and I'm struggling with what to use as a resource for the Bible.
I have the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd manual but haven't really delved into it yet. I do want to use that approach eventually but can't get to it right now because I'm busy trying to get our other Montessori areas in order.
I also wouldn't mind using an audio Bible --- here's one that I found Word and Song Children's Bible and I'm wondering if any of you have used it?
Thanks in advance for sharing your experience and insights on this topic!!!

I will be using the Tomie DePaola Bible Stories for my 4yo and she will be listening in on ds's Bible studies using the DK Illustrated Family Bible. Though these are written to appeal to children I don't think of them as "watered down" like many children's Bible storybooks are.
We will also do the sunday Mass gospel readings (from the USCCB website)and the coloring activities from Open Wednesday. She really likes those and her little face just lights up at Mass when she hears and recognizes the gospel reading.

My daughter loves The Beginner's Bible. Last year, especially (when she was 3.5) we would often read 3 or 4 (or more) stories in one seating because she was so enthralled.

I second Tomie DePaola's Bible stories; many times actual Bible language is used, but the illustrations and the brevity of the stories makes it great for the little ones. We often act out the story after we've read it using wooden people or ourselves, or sometimes draw a picture. I consider this a warm up for narration later. My kids consider it fun!!
I really encourage, you, though, to look into the CGS info you have, and if you have the budget for it, then to order Moira Farrell's albums and just START this in your home. Your 3yo will love it, and feel so important and connected to what he sees and hears at Mass. I really regret that I held back last year because I didn't have all the lovely materials, but this year I just started and totally made do with things I have around the house (until I can get my hands on that mini-Mass kit and get my dh to dust off his jig-saw!) I have to remind myself that this is a homeschool, not a classroom, and it's okay if we fudge the materials a bit when necessary.
In addition, children's saints stories are lovely if your little one will sit and listen. I'm sure there are many recommendations here. You could start collecting titles from Cay's Catholic Mosaic.
Your little one is really young; this age is so beautiful as they emerge into faith and understanding. Seeing you live your faith at Church, and at home, is the most important thing! HTH!

I liked the Family Time Bible for very little kids. Sonlight sells this as well as Amazon. It has really pretty illustrations, and the language is simple but not too dumbed down.
For a really great story bible that is not dumbed down at all, I recommend theErgemeier Bible Story Book. There is a lot of text, and a 3 year old might not sit through, but its certainly appropriate for a 5+ year old, and younger depending on the child's personality. HTH!

Reading this topic immediately brought to mind a passage from a book I recently finished reading. It is the autobiography (entitled _Joy of the Snow_) by the beautiful English author Elizabeth Goudge. Her father was Regius Professor at Oxford. She writes:
I think he had not the slightest idea how to set about instructing a small child...My father took me on his lap...and turned the pages of a New Testament picture book, commenting briefly on the pictures as we considered them one by one. At the pictures of the passion of Christ I refused to look. I had caught a glimpse of one and that was enough. My father was understanding about this and we turned them over in a lump, leaping straight from Palm Sunday to Easter day and ignoring the crux of the matter altogether. Yet now I think that turning the pages of that picture book with my father was the most important thing that ever happened to me, important because for the first time in my life the man in the picture book came out of it and was alive...my father had in some way communicated his own conviction to me. He had made the Christ in the picture book a living person.
(Me again) You see how important sitting with our young ones and a Bible picture book can be
