Yay! I just have to post this b/c I'm so excited! After all the complaints and whining you've heard me make about ds, who was in public school through 5th grade and has been home since last fall, we're finally getting somewhere.
About 2 weeks ago, he finally just settled down and stopped challenging me on narrations, etc. and just did them. After a couple, he agreed that it took much longer and way more effort to complain, stall, etc. than to just do it. First accomplishment!
More importantly, on his own initiative, he's started reading a lot of books on birds of prey, esp. eagles and hawks. He asked me to get some at the library (we have a Red shouldered hawk nesting in our neighbor's yard and she hunts in our yard) - I brought home about 7 books, some adult and some more his age, and even some geared toward younger kids. He's read them all and announced he's going to write a book himself! I can't believe it! My first thought was "let's do a unit study on eagles" but then I figured I'd better not do much leading here and turn him off again. he hasn't shown this much interest in anything except Pokemon and video games since about the 1st grade - he used to be very into trains and dinosaurs but lost that spark in public school.
I did tell him a little about lapbooks but am waiting on Dinah Zike's book from ILL.
have a blessed Easter,
Karen T

What a great testimony!
I have a book recommendation for you (if you need another ):
The Wind Masters by Pete Dunne.
He writes about birds of prey in narrative form (story) but includes all the biological details that are totally fascinating about each one. My son, the resident bird watcher in our family, loved that book. We'd read a chapter at a time (not straight through) and thoroughly enjoyed what we read and what we learned.

Karen,
How wonderful to read this! I'm so happy for you. I agree that letting him run with this for awhile is a great strategy.
Have a blessed Easter,

Julie,
Would that book (the Wind Masters) be good for an almost 12 yo?
I'm definitely interested. I just looked at our library catalog and they don't have it, but Amazon has it. Is it worth buying (they have used copies)?
And, Karen E., don't you know how hard I'm having to restrain myself from taking over this? If I hadn't read so much on the CCM list, here and elsewhere I know I'd be doing that. Thanks!

I know exactly how hard you're trying, because I sometimes need to do the same thing!

Karen,
I intended to respond to this and never did. I just wanted to say that I am so thrilled that you two are finally making progress! It really pained me that he was struggling and I couldn't get any good advice from my friend for you (the one whose nephew struggled so much while he lived at her house)! I hope that he continues to enjoy homeschooling this much. My son loves birds of prey too.

We took this last week off b/c it's the local kids' spring break and all his friends were off, and I was *very* ready for a break as well! But he's continued to be interested in the birds, and even mentioned once that he might like to be a rehabilitator when he grows up. We used to have a man in our neighborhood who rehabbed injured hawks for the airport (they use hawks to keep small birds from being sucked into the engines). Whenever he had a bird at his house, he would walk around the neigborhood letting it hunt. The first time I ever met this guy, I was driving home and here comes this man dressed in army fatigues, walking down the middle of the road with the leather glove on his arm and then a huge hawk alights on him! We got to know him b/c we let him send his birds into our backyard (which backs up to woods) since we had an abundance of squirrels! They moved away several years ago; too bad he's not still around b/c that would be so great for Shane (he was only 5-6 when we knew him)
We are starting the Bravewriter course (basic) tomorrow. I think I am going to focus on that, math, bio of JPII and the upcoming papal election, and the birds and just let everything else slide for awhile.
I've still got to order that book Julie recommended (hey I don't think I realized before that you are *that* Julie!) - Shane's birthday is coming up and MIL just asked him today what he wanted, and he said books about birds of prey, so that would be a great one to add!

Peterson has a Hawks of North America field guide that my son likes. We got it at bookcloseouts, but they don't have any right now.
