Lissa is asking the question and offering curriculum advice over at The Lilting House. Remember, Club Mom has all kinds of blogs, many of them very much the pop culture secular variety. when the regular Club readers read Lissa's blog, they learn a whole lot about a world we love: the world where mom stays home and totally immerses herself in mothering (including educating), with whining (much). I think Lissa is an effective voice in that forum; she lets people know this life is wonderful, not weird. It's a nice safe place for us to venture forth from our mountaintop here and witness to the world. Stop by; offer support; bring perspective. I always learn a thing or two, too.
Oh, and take that quiz; it's pretty interesting! I've done it before (can't remember my exact results). When I did it this morning, it didn't work, so I'll go back later and let you know. Something tells me "Real Learner" isn't an answer, but we'll see what they call "Real Learners."

   I meant withOUT much whining! Last week, I lost my voice with a nasty cold. For days, my five-year-old, who couldn't stand the new "Mommy voice," kept begging me to stop whining . I guess I can count on him to tell me if I ever whine for real. At least, I hope so...

Actually, the way you phrased it the first time described us better!  (At least this week... I think we've had a few too many activities and not quite enough naptime.  ) Still, I love this life, and know (hope?!) all will be back to normal soon!

Salvador Dali Melting clocks are not a problem in your reality. You are an unschooler. You will tolerate a textbook, but only as a last resort. Mud is your friend. You prefer hands-on everything. If your school had an anthem, it would be Dont Worry, Be Happy.
WHAT?!  That is so NOT me... at least I think it's not me... That's the first time EVER, that I've been called an unschooler. Nothing against unschoolers. Just didn't think that was me at all... My friends reading this are going to be scratching their heads over this one...lol

I thought that quiz looked familiar. The 1st question is easy to remember. I've found us in that situation many times.
I remember being a "Mr. Potato Head" so a quick search revealed that I had taken the test before. So have some of you. 
Taking it again, I still came out "Mr. Potato Head".

Have your kids take it. MIchael came out an unschooler, which is totally on target. Mary Beth came out just like me, which seems to happen with every single online quiz we take !

I come out as an unschooler also, though I know I am not one, really. But I knew ahead of time we would be hard to pin down! I don't even know exactly how to define our style, which is why I came up with the term "us-schooling"!
Of course, with only a few categories, there is a limit to how accurate the quiz can be, but it can still be useful. I find when I read through all the choices, there is a little of me in several of them. Unschooler, Potato Head, Swiss-Family, and CM. And some which are definitely NOT me. Sometimes I learn more about myself by defining just what I am NOT, rather than what I AM.

Elizabeth, I got such a kick out of that this morning! I generally save my whining for Alice on the phone. I'm sure I do my fair share of it, but I wouldn't want to broadcast it for all the world (including my own kids) to see. That's one of the reasons I so love all the 4Real blogs: the upbeat tone. We're honest, but we aren't bitter. We love what we're doing and see immense value in it, and when we write about problems or challenges, it's with an eye toward finding a solution, not just to get a laugh.
Thanks for the mention! I think it'll be a fun discussion. Over at ClubMom I'm speaking to a broad audience, which can be tricky. I so want to do just what you said, show the world how much joy there can be in this vocation.

I came across this post written by a dad on MommyBloggers, and it's just exactly what we're up against.
But, I have to admit, as my wife has persevered raising our three very “active” boys (5, 3, and 1), I’ve realized that my wife has sacrificed more than just a nice salary to stay at home with the kids…she sacrificed a normal lifestyle.
Almost in an instant, her social life, friends, intelligent conversation, and anything resembling contact with a normal adult (outside of me, of course) disappeared from her life completely.
Emphasis mine. And I'll repeat it: she sacrificed a NORMAL LIFESTYLE -- wow! I can't respond to this because I know staying at home IS NORMAL. Our society has just warped the original fulfillment of woman, of motherhood.
But "them's fighting words" in today's society. What Lissa and Elizabeth and all you wonderful 4RealLearning moms are witnessing that being at home with our children and being the primary educators and embracing our motherhood IS normal AND wonderful. Thank you for that witness.

THIS is normal! This is life the way God intended it to be!
I feel so so so sorry for so many lost people out there...it must be sad to feel "not normal" for doing what is natural.

I came out an unschooler too. I guess that should encourage me in my study of unschooling this summer. I am drawn to it but a little nervous.
The "Don't Worry, Be Happy" motto would send my husband into a laughing fit! If anyone knows how to worry it is me! Maybe if I find my true calling as an unschooler I will lighten up a little? Who knows? Anything is possible.

Me...And I was Abraham Lincoln. I think the key answer for that was saying on my dining room table was a bible and stacks of library books....which is true. And a Dictionary. And some more books.

I came out Mr. Potato Head just now. I am pretty sure I was Abraham Lincoln when I took the same quiz last year. I wonder what I answered differently?
I found that I had quite a few "none of the above" answers. Or, to be more precise, "a bit of each of the above" answers. For example, my home is decorated with candles, antiques, souvenirs from our (limited) travels, books, books, and more books, a (Kirsten) doll dressed like Laura Ingalls Wilder, pieces of the last board game the kids played, great-grandma's furniture (those are the antiques!), an American flag on the front porch, and a few generations of family portraits. But not the other things mentioned in each option.
Sometimes I find the answer choices for these types of quizzes fit me really well. But the quizzes just frustrate me when I read all the options and can't find any that reflect me. Oh well . . . .
