Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

One way I judge how successful my curriculum choices are is how often I find books revisited by my dc of their own accord.

This year, no matter how many times I reshelve the Life of Fred books we have already worked through or the Sassafrass Zoology Adventure book, I find them pulled out again and lying around the house.

A lot of the Usborne science anatomy books I have for our anatomy study this year migrate around the house as well, and so does the DK First Encyclopedia of Science.

That is a good thing

Of course, the grammar books stay solidly in place... well, can't win them all!

What travels at your house?

The books that travel most here are comic books.        Various art books and how-to-draw books travel too.

The Penrose math books and Kingfisher History Encyclopedia used to travel a lot.

Janette Tin-Tin just lives in motion here. I gave up on assigning shelf space.

I haven't paid attention so much in that sense, but I have contemplated getting rid of the books that are actually on the shelf where they belong

That is such a good point, Lindsay, and one I have recently added into my criteria for evaluating what stays and what goes. If a book has never moved from the shelf, then why am I keeping it?

TinTin, Calvin and Hobbs, and now Fox Trot travel all over my house. Also, our Ranger Ricks and National Geo Kids magazines travel.

I do not have unlimited shelf space, and I want to have room for the books my kids enjoy (vs, what I wish they were reading...).

I think I am failing in the "my kids love my curriculum" because none of the books I choose for "curriculum" are chosen to read independently.

Comics, the Childcraft books, The Children's Hour, books on cars, The Way Things Work, and the 'I love math' series are popular right now. Oh and I spy books. :)

Our Kingfisher History Encyclopedia is in tatters. Missing front cover, worn pages. It's a mess but well loved.
I keep many of our books on shelves in what used to be our classroom. I know there are some down there that would get more use if I brought them up. I just don't have a lot of space up here and we already have stacks of books and baskets of books here and there. I try to keep the picture books fresh, bringing up a new batch every month or season though.

I need to seriously consider this, especially since I'm on a mission to simplify and downsize.

I hadn't thought about this, but I bet that some of the books on our shelves would get used if I pulled them out and started flipping through them myself. I bet my younger set doesn't know about half of what's there.

Hmm... I think I must check into the Kingfisher History book...
I have heard from several sources now that it is very good.

My dc still love to pour over the I Love Math books- I don't see that I will ever be giving those away.

I try to rotate books as well, but still they are a big source of my "clutter".

I have- gulp- given away four large boxes and about 7 bags of books in the past 2 months. I have to remind myself, too, that some books I brought into the house knowing that they were only for a season or a particular purpose, and it's fine to let them move on.

So last week I looked over our books again. Funny thing -- there were books that I had kept because I assumed that my oldest would want them and it turns out that he considered them to be utterly boring.     Guess it pays to actually ask!

Field guides, comics, art books. Novels only when they are being read!

History books- never! The kids love history, but mostly in novel form!
