Well, my 9 year old ds still can't cut a straight line to save his life. His fine motor skills are lacking and I don't know if this is common for his age with boys or not. Any recommendations to practice cutting? I know there are worksheets out there. Anyone run across any lately . . . . ones my nine year old wouldn't think are babyish?

oh I'd skip worksheets, how boring cut out anything.. color pictures that are colored (we did this one year for Easter and had butterflies and colored eggs and flowers taped up all over the livingroom for decor), let him cut out paper to make patterns for something.

Do anything that involves fine motor skills.. build with small legos. Use tweezers to pick up and transfer small objects (got any beads that need to be seperated?) fold paper (origami) etc.

How about the game "Operation". or pick up sticks or marbles.

oh collages.. cut pictures out of magazines (find boy ones ) and paste them onto sheets of paper.

Do you do coupons? make him your coupon cutter.. as long as he doesn't mangle the bar code it'll give him practise.

My 7 year old loves the Kumon cutting books. I know they say a younger age range, but I think older kids would enjoy them.

We like to make paper chains. Which are all about cutting straight lines. :) You can cut free hand or you can draw straight lines with a ruler and sharpie. You might have your son draw the lines as the perfect size is about one ruler width (more fine motor skill/ and attention to detail practice). When done, link and staple to make a chain. My nine year old will make chains with colored paper corresponding to birthdays, Christmas, Fall, lent, and advent. Some times for lent and advent we will pull a chain a day. It is all fun and no one even knows about the cutting skills practice!

We do coupon cutting and cut things out of the sport and technical ads just for fun also.
