I have been reading The King of the Golden City by Mother Mary Loyola to my boys. We read it 1 days a week and read a chapter each time. It isn't going that well! I can't get any narrations out of them and they are having a hard time understanding what the story is about. They have completely lost any interest in the book now and groan when I get it out.
What do you do about this? Stop reading the book or push through? Should I be worried that they aren't understanding this story? Maybe is the writing style that they are struggling with? Of course, I'm enjoying the story!

I think CHC has a free teacher's guide you can download for that book... that might help them understand it. There's a lot of symbolism in it.
But I do abandon books if my dc are not interested in them- there are so many good books out there...

Yes, there is a download teacher's guide for it. The book is meant to be an allegory. We read it last year and honestly, I couldn't wait for it to be done. It kinda dragged on and on. And I don't think it has much appeal to boys. It seemed more "girly."

Well, that would explain it! We have a struggle reading any books with leading girl characters. Being a girl myself I completely forget this about my boys! They will overlook a leading girl character if the book has enough excitement or a good supporting boy character.
I have that study guide, but it wasn't helping much.

We started this book but my boys fizzled out as far as their interest. My dd went ahead and finished reading it herself. I guess that goes right along with what Mom21 said!

Honestly, I also think it is too deep for that age. I liked it but it was painful for my kids (funny enough, more so for my dd than the two boys).
eta, I didn't look to see your kids ages Well, I think it is too deep for 6-8 year olds. But another thought came to mind, maybe there is too much time between reading? If you read it more often, they maybe more interested? If the oldest is having more trouble with it, maybe he has reached that cynical stage?

We have attempted it twice and both times, my kids eyes totally glaze over. I also found it hard to read aloud. I'm thinking of giving it to my oldest two (12 & 10) to read alone, and then discuss.

This is our second time trying it has a read aloud (tried a year ago). Ds 12 has tried to read it alone (twice a year apart) with no luck. I too struggle with reading it out loud.
I think I'm glad to learn that my boys aren't the only one!

I'm so glad to hear this! We started reading it last fall and I basically gave up on it. It was one of those that sounded like such a great idea to me, but my son didn't really understand it. He is such a literal thinker, and young (he's 8 now) - I guess it wasn't a great fit for him yet. He didn't dislike it, although he didn't get into it either. But he would ask so many questions as I was reading, it was clear he wasn't getting it. "Who is that, again?" "Wait, what are they talking about?" "Mom, I don't get what they are saying." LOL. I'm glad I'm not the only one who tried this book and it didn't work out.
ETA: I hadn't officially decided to stop reading it, but I think I will shelve it for now. I'd rather not trudge through something that he isn't understanding; we could be reading something else. We certainly have enough books!

We bought the Audio Cd and listened to it in the car. My 10 and 8 year old daughters liked it but my boys were too young to even notice it at the time.
I will say, small short bits are the best way to take this book in and then discuss it instead of narrate. IMO, narrations from this book would be a too much for a 2nd grader.
