Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

What does notebooking look like in your homeschool? I was snooping in the forums, and read some on it, and it kind of appeals to me, it would be a creative outlet for dd9 as well. But I'm not really wrapping my head around what it really is.

We used to do really well with workbooks, but now she is not too keen on them anymore, life is ever evolving here.
For some things it's fine but there so much unnecessary in there, we're finding.

I like the idea to eliminate the busy work, giving us(her) more time to explore art, music, chasing rabbit trails, reading.

I'd love to see/read what this looks like with your grade 4-6's.

We are just starting to do more notebooking (versus lapbooking or workbooks). I've set up one for USA Studies but haven't posted photos yet--soon! We set up one for our American Girl Doll history studies; I have photos on my blog of the Addy/Civil War study we did this fall. We used alot of the free printables on Homeschool Share. You can see a few photos here:

(My daughter is 10 but she has some learning challenges so she isn't working at 4th grade level.)

We use notebooking as a way to keep and record narrations.

I have a folder full of different style notebook pages that I printed off of notebooking sites (for example: all lined, lined with 1 box for illustrating, lined with 3 boxes, no lines just boxes, etc.) that they pick from when they need to do a narration.

We use them for history, science, poetry, creative writing, music, nature study, etc. and whatever they want to write about. Older ones write their own, younger ones dictate to me. Everybody really likes illustrating their work.

When they are done, they pop them into binders (by subject) in a plastic sleeve (those transparency page holder thingys), and that is our record of what we learned. Nothing too fancy, but it works for me. I am not a big projecty/crafty person, and this is simple enough for me to handle.      Oh, and it is inexpensive.      We do some lapbooking, but notebooking is really our main way of showing what we've learned.

One thing that I really enjoy about it is that they like to look back at their old work and re-read it. This is not something that they did with the workbooks we used (however, they filled a need at that point in our life, for sure!). They seem to take more pride in it. Most likely because of all the drawing they get to do.      HTH! Have fun researching!
