Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have been waiting for CHC to publish its revised 2nd grade lesson plans and they are finally available! Middle ds will be 2nd grade this fall and I am planning on ordering them, but I thought I'd ask here first and get opinions ...

If you've used them, in general, did you and dc enjoy them, and, specifically, did you find they were helpful with First Holy Communion prep?

Thanks!

Hi Dawn,
I have the 2nd lessons plans for my 2nd grade ds. I really didn't use them except for the religion supplement. They are wonderful and beautiful, but not quite suited for my ds. He enjoyed the 1st penance prep- loved the stories, but he doesn't like to make any of the books or other projects...
I think I will use them for my dd they will really click with her personality.
I wish I just would have committed totally to using the lesson plans insted of subing some of my own stuff... I think ds would have liked it better and I would have not driven myself so nuts
just my.02
Alison

I used the plans with my ds and really enjoyed them. We mostly used the Religion and supplements which were worth the whole price, imo.

I did use bits and pieces of the other stuff but used my own math and reading. He did like the spelling and the grammar workbook. I mostly wanted him practicing penmanship and with a bunch of folks in therapy, the workbooks were one way I knew that dc did some writing every single day - even if it were minimal. Since he took to it, it worked for us.

I also found the reading comprehension very helpful - something I thought I would NEVER do. We weren't sticklers to the plan but found that an occassinal exercise kept me more in touch with whether or not dc was picking up some of the subtleties and help. With our vision problems, we have found that some of our dc really suffer with reading comp despite being read to, book discussion and reading a lot. Probably because I have trouble focusing on more than one thing at a time - and somehow miss stuff with 6.

Anyways - we may have liked more of the other stuff just because of the dynamics in our family with 6 dc and mom stressed trying to finish therapy and keep up with high schooler, etc., etc. I know lots on this board don't like workbooks at all. We did like CHCs - at least the way we used them for a spot check for mom to see what I really need to teach and what the dc seem to be absorbing on their own just from our everyday life. Just my .02 - Hope that helps.

Janet

I also used the plans and ended up primarily doing the Religion supplement and not "following" the rest.

I really love the Religion supplement. The stories that they have are very good and the kids enjoyed it.

Dawn, I was waiting for the revised 2nd grade plans too. I placed an order this week. I also ordered the old kindergarten plans. I'm glad to hear that people liked the religion supplement. That's mainly what I'm interested in, but I look forward to checking out the other ideas too.

Dawn, We have used the 2nd grade plans especially for 1st Holy Communion prep. They work very nicely alongside Elizabeth's Notebook project and was very meaningful for my ds who just received. He really enjoyed making his own prayer and Mass book as well. I hope to load pics to my blog soon, maybe before the move we'll see!! To me the plans are worth the price even just for the religion supplement as I will be using it for two more ds's and maybe more!! HTH, hugs.

Meredith,
I would love to see your pictures. I'm going to check out all the First Communion notebook posts this summer. My ds will be making his next year. When are you moving? We're moving May 31st. I'm trying to pack a little each day. I'm making progress...

Thank you everyone for your thoughts on CHC's 2nd grade plans. I am glad to hear you all have had positive experiences! I'm off to order them now ...

I'm also off to print out the FHC notebook thread! When did you all start them? I'd like to start soon as ds is excited to watch this year's celebrants, and happy to hear it's his turn next!

we started our FHC notebook in the fall. i got together with 3 other hsing families who had first communicants. we met on first fridays, the moms discussed how we would do the pages for the next month and then the kids showed each other the pages they had completed in the previous month.      then at april's meeting, we took pictures of each child with their book and they all signed each other's books. at our FHC party, we had my son's book out and the guests also wrote notes in it.

Mary,

I love these ideas. I'm going ot prep my ds (7) and dd (6) at the same time so they'll be doing notebooks together. With CHC's ideas, Cay's Mosaic, and the great ideas here, I think my littles will have a wonderful sacrament prep!

Thanks!

Dawn, we started at the beginning of his 2nd grade year which for us was about last July/August. By taking the whole year, the NB really progressed nicley without TOO much CRAM at the nearing of his Celebration. As it turned out we didn't get to do the entire CHC plan, but for him the most meaningful parts, which was almost all of it!! Have fun, I think you will really enjoy the preparation, my son and I both learned from each other it was very special!!

Mary, how wonderful! I wish I had a few families to work with around here, but I think it will be just us. We've been doing religious ed. at home (for lots of reasons) but I think this year we will try CCD, especially since it is a sacrament year for middle son. It would be ideal to work in a small group as you did.

Thank you for sharing this Meredith. I am eager to start planning out our notebooks! Here it is May so July is around the corner ... I will be combing back through the thread for ideas and information.

Piggybacking ?- Is it worth buying these plans just for the First Holy Communion plans? I'm pretty set with my curriculum and I know I won't use the rest of the plans.

jen, imo, if you are doing a notebook, then i wouldn't buy the plans. if you are wanting to add to faith and life or some other religious ed book, then i would add the chc plans.

Jen, will you be using them for more than one child, if so, I think it's definately worth it as they corresepond very nicely with Elizabeth's and other's NB ideas. I am so pleased with my ds's I feel bad that I didn't do this with my dd Although just the CHC plans seemed to be enough for her, they were so much more meaningful to both my ds and I in correlation with the NB, just my .02 AND, if you do any of the CGS it's all the more hands on. (We did not have any CGS materials or ideas, but I am intrigued by the whole Atrium concept).

Everyone may already be aware of this, but CHC sells their Lesson Plans for use with one child. If you wish to use them with more than one child, then they are available for purchase under the "Group Copyright" at a higher price.

Their website states, "CHC Lesson Plans: The copyright on lesson plans is a standard copyright, which allows unlimited use of the material as long as copies are not made. Group copyright editions of CHC Lesson Plans are available for those who wish to copy pages from the lesson plans for use with multiple children within their own family, homeschool group, or class."

If you are using them with more than one child, than the increased price is probably worth it.

The standard price for using the Second Grade lesson plans with one child is $36.95, the group price for these plans is $100.

Sigh...I've seen their reasoning, but this is one area of CHC that frustrates me. If I'm only using for my own children...I don't quite understand this stance they take.

So, for my copy of A Year with God, I should have paid a higher price because I use it with (my) 3 children instead of just 1? I think I paid regular price for it ...

A Year with God is sold at regular price with a family copyright, so you're fine Dawn.
