Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm doing a unit study for my children on Ukraine. I'd love to get your input on materials (books, audio, video, websites) that I should include.

I want to cover history, art, music, food, literature, language, and geography.

Blessings,

Read The Kitchen Madonna (Rumer Godden) if you haven't already. As you possibly already know, the plot centers around a Ukrainian immigrant/refugee in London who is homesick because the kitchen of the family for whom she works as housekeeper has no "good place," ie an image of Our Lady. It's a beautiful story with lots of insights into Urkainian culture, even though it's set in England.

Fantastic! Thank you both.

I hadn't realized that "The Kitchen Madonna" had anything to do with Ukraine. Super. I only have "A Doll's House" here. On my list now.

Blessings,

For more info on Kitchen Madonna, MaryM did some footwork here. There's a little Ukrainian/Polish crossover in this book.

If you search the forums, you'll find loads of ideas based on the Ukrainian eggs art. Lots of books and ideas to go from there.

A book that is a crossover of Ukraine and Hungarian is a favorite of ours, OOP, but so wonderful: Poppy Seed Cakes by Margery Clark. I posted a bit of sleuthing I had done here related to the book.

The Mitten, in its various forms, is a Ukrainian Legend.
