The summer Olympics in London are almost here. What ideas do you have to using this as an educational experience? (We love watching-but I would like to plan on more than just watching.)
We made a great lapbook for the winter olympics in Canada but I'm not coming up with much for free online for these Olympics.
Also, what about picture books that we could all enjoy....any favorites out there?

What a great idea, Joann! I will watch this thread to learn about others' ideas, too! I was in Barnes & Noble yesterday, and I noticed a small display of the Olympics. There were various books about the Olympics and London. (Even a London travel book and a sticker-play book were included, which showed me you could really incorporate a variety of ages at different levels.) It got me thinking ... and now seeing your post, well, I definitely think it would be fun to make this an educational experience!

We adapted this lapbook for use in our co-op this spring. I went to the London Olympics website for info about the torch relay, stadiums, paralympics, sports offered, etc.

Nice, Joann! 
We have checked out a few library books about England, also several about the Olympics. I've also gathered a basket of living biographies of famous Olympic athletes, like Jesse Owen, etc.
One fun book we've read was about all the different foods eaten in England:
shepherd pie, bubble and squeak, haggis, etc. It made me very hungry.... I've always thought I would be very good at having tea every day.

Since this thread started, I have discovered a few things ...
Free e-book of Olympic activities for kids.
A number of ideas on Pinterest. Just do a search ... I've seen crafts, snacks, books, activities, etc.
By chance, did anyone see the new American Girl movie on TV this weekend? It is about the Girl of the Year, McKenna, who is a young gymnast. It tied in well to all of the commercials for the upcoming Summer Games ... It was an OK movie, but the books are probably better. There were some bad attitudes, but the girls learn their lesson ... Could be a good Olympic tie-in, especially for an uninterested child ...

An update on the Olympics at my house: My living room floor has been completely taken over by the Beanie Baby Olympic Games
Gymnastics
Soccer
I especially like the First Communion Beanie Babies playing tennis. They are already dressed in white, so they are naturals. Of course, don't try to walk through my living room...

Oh, yes- we had the official Beanie Baby Olympics on Sunday. There were 15 events- everything from weightlifting to fencing to diving- and many beanie baby athletes. My dh and I were treated to a full hour of watching the different events.
Judging was a little tricky, though, with one judge being accused of unfair bias. And it didn't seem right somehow to have the Slow Poke the Sloth competing against a platypus in swimming, but there you have it.
The overall gold medalist was a calico cat beanie baby named Chip.
Now our Olympic venue has been torn down, and a stadium is under construction so all the beanie babies can watch the human Olympics comfortably tomorrow.
