Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Do you glance at the state curriculum standards when you are planning? I'm in a state (TX) that doesn't expect anything of HS students. There is a 32 pg. document of items for 1st grade, though! I'm trying to figure out if that would be a good benchmark for me to consider, since I am not using a packaged curriculum.

I also live in a state that has no active requirements. I don't look at the state standards. In the past I've looked at the ones at the World Book website, especially when I first started out. But so many of those scope and sequences are subjective. The only way I could see it being really helpful is if you think you will be doing an standardized testing and ,if so, using the same test that your state does.

Interestingly enough, the standardized tests don't match with the state standards either (unless you're in a state that writes their own standardized tests AND standards - a rare case). ;)

We look at them, but only for K-en (just for kicks, since we'd done Montessori for preschool and K-en), 3rd grade and 6th grade. I chose 3rd and 6th to correlate with lower elementary and upper elementary in the Montessori environment. They will be used as a guide in these two grades for my son to say "ok, if I were in public school, these are the expectations; have I covered them." He loves stuff like this anyway, so it won't be an issue with him.

For middle school, we won't even look at all since we'll be doing our own thing, Lord-willing.

For high school, it won't so much be about standards as about just looking at credit requirements as a baseline for our overall plan.

I think looking at benchmarks at varying times (not every year!) allows one to see how far they've come; that they are on the right path without using the same tools and that all is well - and/or reveals, "Ah! Perhaps I should get going on that topic, after all!" But it's not a daily pressure thing.

Just my thoughts :)

(oh, and our only requirements are to have school 180 days a year - that's it. No subjects; no standards).
