Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Has anyone had any experience with this program by the Nashville Dominicans?

I can't quite tell if it is something you can purchase to use or it is something that is simply being implemented in their schools. In the link, they offer a spreadsheet overview, which I think would be very helpful for starting or supplementing your own course of study in this area. It reminds me very much of a JenMack spreadsheet

I like having the three different saints whose lives are especially tied to the different virtues.

Also, their simple definitions look ideal for elementary copywork as well, perhaps changed from the passive ("Believing in God and all He has revealed.") to the imperative ("Believe in God and all he has revealed.")

Love their layout!

This looks very similar to a virtues program that my diocese put together for their schools-- hmmm over 15 years ago? We received many handouts and most of the virtues applied are shown in the Nashville sisters Year 1 and Year 3. I know the Nashville sisters are in our diocese too.

When I received the program, it was before the internet -- we just received handouts. And knowing me, I still have them somewhere! I got the impression then that the schools brainstormed on how to implement these ideas. The seminar gave some suggestions. I know I went back and brainstormed with our student council on ideas of how to implement the virtues and put quotes and examples of saints, etc. At the same time that the diocese did this, we also had a Seton parent/child psychologist give a presentation on virtues based on Character Building by David Isaacs. This book organized virtues by age. I suspect a lot of these programs were developed from his ideas.

Our parish school still does this virtue program in the elementary level and recognizes different students once a month for the particular virtue.

Anyway, this is my long and postpartum meandering way of saying that I think many schools tweak a virtues program to fit their needs. I really like your idea for copywork. :)

I just love the Nashville Dominicans. <3 Doesn't hurt that my BFF is a sister there and that I almost entered myself.

I contacted them about purchasing it and this was the reply:

Dear Robin,

I am happy that you are interested in our ViP program, I am just wondering how you happened to learn about it? We are in the second year of the ViP program here at St. Mary's and this is what our principal, Sister Andrea Marie, had to say concerning your inquiry.
"This is something that the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia are working on to make available on a wider basis, beyond the schools in which they teach. However, it is currently not available for use or reproduction outside this scope. They hope to have it approved for general distribution by September 2012. You're welcome to check back with St. Mary's School at that time, or contact the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia directly at http://nashvilledominican.org/Home/Bookstore."

Thank you for your interest and we wish you all the best! Please feel free to contact us with any more questions you may have.

Peace and Blessings,

Kathryn Chou

That looks like a neat resource, Amanda, even if as a supplement or reference.

Amanda,

Thank you for sharing that virtues program. I have been searching for something like that to use as an outline.

This program from LaCrosse looks neat. We've exhausted our studies with little Flowers and Blue Knights so this might be the next ticket and I can do boys and girls TOGETHER! :)

So glad the link is helpful to some of you. The sad thing is, I have no idea how I came across it! I just remember as soon as I saw it I thought, I have to share that on the 4real thread!

Check out the links on the left hand side as well -there are outlines for each year of religion- lots of scripture and suggestions, as well as a handout on praying with scripture. Great references!

I was doing some brainstorming for next year and was looking for the list I'd linked in this thread. That link no longer works, but here you can find the entire "Parent's Guide" for the program, which includes the chart I'd originally posted and a breakdown of each of the virtues for the parent to apply at home (since it is written as a curriculum for a brick and mortar school).

I'd heard from a friend who has her children in a Dominican school that the Sisters of St. Cecilia were going to make this program available very soon, so in finalizing our plans for the new year, I decided to take one more look. I was delighted to see that, not only will the program in its entirety be available for download next Monday (July 8) but that it will also be FREE!

Quote:

The Virtues in Practice program will be available for viewing and downloading on July 8, 2013. To receive an email notification when the program is available, please contact neoffice@op-tn.org.

The Virtues in Practice program was originally written by a team of parents and faculty members at St. Gertrude School in Cincinnati, Ohio in 2005. The program began as a nine-year cycle with students in kindergarten through eighth grade learning about a different virtue, and saint that exemplified that virtue, each month. It was intended only for the use of St. Gertrude School, but within a short time it became clear that many schools desired the use of such a program.

To make the program accessible to a wider audience, Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia from several schools worked together with faculty and staff volunteers in those schools to create the current program which follows a spiraling curriculum that repeats the same virtues over a three-year cycle while introducing new saints each year.

Program elements include:

·        Student workbooks (Pre-K to Grade 8)

·        Virtue of the month

·        Saint of the month

·        3-year cycle of virtues and spiraling curriculum

·        Activities to grow in the month’s virtue and in knowledge of the month’s saint

·        Parent guide and home projects

This program is the fruit of grace and collaboration, and is offered free of charge to those who wish to use it in their home or school. It is our prayer that all who read it will be inspired to pattern their lives more faithfully on that of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. May our lives radiate His virtues, so that others may come to know and believe in the life and love He offers freely!

For questions related to the Virtues in Practice program,

please contact the Office for the New Evangelization at neoffice@op-tn.org.

Thank you so much for bumping this Lindsay! I'm so eager to see this full program - and what a blessing that the Sisters are making it available for free!

Update- I signed up for the email to let me know when it was ready for download ( really to remind me to go look today :) ) and I just got the e-mail!     The Parent Guide and four books of the Year of Faith are now available for download: Virtues in Practice

Also, attached to my e-mail was an overview brochure that seems helpful, but I don't see it on the site to click. So, you might want to e-mail them if you'd like that. The e-mail is on the same page.

Looking forward to reading through this and using it as a resource!
