Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

After 15 years of home schooling and seeing kids growing up all around me in our neighborhood, it has really hit me that home schooling is so much more than academics. I knew this in my head but am realizing it in my heart. I have seen that home schooled kids are not immune to the pitfalls that other kids that are not homeschooled fall into.

Besides academics, what to you do to encourage and instill in your children those very things that are so much more important than academics...a relationship with God and good character?

For me it has been constant vigilence through prayer. It has been encouraging the kids when they behave well and not slamming down too hard on them when they don't. For me, it has been working on my character mostly because I know the kids are watching, seeing if we practice what we preach. For me it has been talking to our teenagers about anything and everything. For me it has been knowing that our children belong to God.

I would love to hear what you all have to say about this topic!
Blessings,
Marianne

Oh Marianne, You said it so beautifully that I can't think of anything to add! Really - you post is something for us all to read now and again!

I know that home schooled kids can fall into the same problems as other - but seems to me in my 12 years experience that public school kids are getting meaner and more rude! I love the time I have with my kids to work on them being the opposite!

I have only been homeschooling for a couple of years and I already see a huge difference. My 7 year old has several issues with her friends that go to our parish school. It's a shame. I am so grateful to God for calling my family to homeschool. The added bonus is that I am growing and learning right along with the kids .

Yes, dinasiano, I agree home schooling makes such a difference! And Barb you are so right the public school kids are getting meaner. Bullying is an epidemic right now.

Some of the home school kids have entered school only to go right along with these behaviors and sometimes act even worse. My son recently witnessed sacrilegious behavior by a teen who was formerly home schooled. His parents are such strong christians. I am so sorry that he witnessed this.

I am seeing how difficult it is for teens and young adults out in the world. Praying for right judgement for all teens. That they will gravitate toward good people.

When I was at Confirmation recently, my heart welled up for these teens. My the Holy Spirit guide them.
