Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hello, ladies,
As I begin to build (or continue to build) our family library, I am again debating the format for my next book purchases.

When you have the option do you choose paperback or hardback books?

I'm working with a PreK/K kid (who is very gentle with books) and anticipating using these books with at least one other and possibly (hopefully) more.

Do you think a hardbound book generally holds up better? Commands more respect?
Paperback versions are obviously cheaper in the shortrun... assuming they hold up.

Part of me is partial to the hardback books - imagining passing them down to my grandkids... the other part of me knows I have MANY books to buy and paperbacks are probably the way to go.

Please share your opinion - paper or plastic (I mean, hardback)?

As much as I would love my library to be filled with hardback books, that choice is usually prohibitive. Most of the books I purchase nowadays are paperback. But, I sometimes think I should cover them with contact paper or something to help them stand up a bit better.

If you can afford it and you have the space, I would say hardback. The hardbacks hold up so much better. All of my picture book purchases and some of my other book purchases are hardback.

We do paperback when we can, unless it is a very special book that I know will get tons of use (for example Jan Brett's Christmas Treasury ). Money is the deciding factor here.

We tend to get as many of our very Catholic books in hardback as possible - and some very special read alouds. Otherwise we get paperback. We invest in good book tape and try to stay on top of any pages coming out with some glue. Really, finances dictate here.

Most of our paperbacks have survived 6 children - not all of them as gentle as I would desire and some avid readers that curl up with numerous books at once in a corner of the floor where toddler then steps on books in the pile. We're still working on care of books here.

Some paperbacks are better bound than others - or so it seems to us. For instance, all our Bethlehem Books have held up but some of our TAN books have come apart even when only big kids were using them.

This post from Lissa has made me think more seriously about buying harbacks when we can. This is just a piece of at least 2 longer-type posts she wrote on a thread in Living Lit called "choosing appropriate literature."

Lissa wrote:
For now there still exists a pretty strong distinction between "trade" books (literary works like, say, The Penderwicks or Because of Winn-Dixie--trade books are usually published in hardcover first) and "mass market" books, which includes the whole gamut of licensed-character spinoffs, contemporary series generated in-house, 8x8 picture books, paperback originals, etc. A trade book is unlikely to be part of a big merch plan--unless, as I said, it is made into a movie--or if it's a classic that has now entered the public domain--or a classic whose copyright is now owned by second- or third-generation heirs of the estate who are more interested in keeping the royalties rolling in than in protecting the integrity of grandpa's work.

This is why I always encourage people to buy hardcover copies (new, not used) of books they like, if they can possibly afford them, to prove to the publishers that people still value quality literary fiction.

Well I just have a personal preference for hardback, however as said cost often prohibits this.

I really encourage you to cover your books. I contacted my local library and got the name of their supplier for book covering plastic. this is the proper library covering, and I also purchased the special sticky tape that will not yellow. i just love the feel of the plastic My dh fears for my sanity.

I have books here that were mine as a child like new because my mum also covered our books. Makes all the difference.

I choose hardback, hands down, for everything if I can. I usually buy fewer books so I can get the hardback choices.

I really believe in covering books, too, Erin, but I keep forgetting to buy those covers! Thanks for the reminder!

Hello, again, several of you mentioned covering your books - can anyone point me in the direction of the suppliers you like and methods you use?

I found a company called Brodart and was nearly overwhelmed and the choices... and uncertain if I found what I was looking for.

Any advice or experiences you care to share would be greatly appreciated

As I mentioned I also didn't know where so I rang the head office of my regional library and they told me their supplier who also was willing to supply to me.

An idea for you that I do is contact other homeschoolers in my area and we order together, saves postage. Also the suppliers will cut the roll in half if we want so some prefer shorter rolls. I go through so much I go for the bigger amount

I'm unsure what you mean by the method, are you referring to covering dust jackets?
