Despite my attempts to do the notebooking thing, it never seems to take off around here. Not sure why. I really like the idea of it. My ds and I did create a notebook when he was in Kinder. It included all the important things he learned that year. He still loves it. I don't know why I can't seem to get it going with my older kids though. Perhaps they perceive it as "more work" so they are reluctant.
Anyway, once the winter doldrums hit, I usually try to change things a bit in either our academics or our environment and this year I'm planning to try notebooking once again.
I'm thinking of having my 5th and 7th graders do notebooks for history, science, Religion and nature study (possibly poetry as well). Does that sound reasonable?
I've been reading at various sites and even bought a book download from the notebooking fairy site, but I can't seem to find the information I am looking for. I would really like to see a sample schedule of how notebooking works. How is it incorporated into your week? For example, I'm thinking, for my 5th grader I will schedule his history notebook something like this -
Mon. - read, Tue. - read, Wed. - read, Thur. - notebook page about what was read.

Is that reasonable or should he be notebooking after each reading?

Also, should we have a "notebooking day" when I get out all the stuff and the kids work on their notebooking assignments for the week, or should they make entries in their notebooks as needed for each subject?

Are these questions ridiculous? Am I making more of this than I need to (I tend to do that!

I'm just trying to get a picture of how this will look when we get started.

We've done this off and on for years. In the early years I required notebooking after new concepts, finishing a chapter, those kind of pegs. Now that the kids are older, it has become more of a habit for them and they will notebook on their own. Sometimes they use the cute pages I have downloaded from other sites, and sometimes they just grab a spiral notebook. It really is a benefit to them to go back and look up something in their own words, just as it is a benefit to me to be able to see what they are questioning and what they are comprehending, especially as they grow older and don't need my teaching as much as when they were younger.

We have done it several different ways over the years.
Right now I have dd(10) doing approx one notebook page per day, a different subject each day.
In order to keep variety, her notebooks are different for each subject.
Her history notebook is a traditional 3-ring binder with printed pages from Notebookingpages.com.

Her nature notebook is the same,

but she also has a nature journal she uses too,depending on what we are studying.

Her geography notebook is a black/white composition book which she has decorated herself.

It's one of those with half-lined pages so she can draw or paste pictures in the top half and write on the bottom half.

I find this type of notebook very versatile.

Her writing journal is also a comp book, but fullly lined, and she decorated it too, by gluing on some pretty fabric from my stash.

I think it helps to keep things fresh to have a variety of notebook types, and doing a different subject each day.
She has a religion/saints notebook, too, but we have put it aside for now in favor of some coloring pages instead.
Anyway, that's how we do it here.
