This week I placed my order with Catholic Heritage Curriculum. I've been holding off and holding off, but we decided to do so early.
As it ends up, I'm customizing it. I currently have the grade 2 planner for the First Communion. In looking at a few things, I decided that since she is going to CIC (Christian Initiation of Children) at the parish, that I didn't want to get too heavy. So this is what we'll do.
It's going to be customized heavily..lol. I'll be melding grade 2&3 together. We'll be using the grade 2 religion program. Simply because it'll be a little easier, and it will fit well with the First Communion from the grade 2 planner. I also decided to use the grade 2 social studies this year and the grade 3 next year. That will give me time to create/find a Canadian content as it shifts to a heavy US content for 4th, which is fine, but we're in Canada, so I'll follow the general layout and create something Canadian. So now I have time, and it's fun and light and she'll enjoy it.
I am also using the All About Spelling and Math mammoth.(because I have them) ROFL.
But we'll be using their reading, grammar & composition, Science, handwriting, art, map skills.
SO how is it going to work? Obviously it would be a mess working from 2 planners.
I have created a custom planner, inputting the lessons that we're using. I'm using a similar layout. I've transferred all the religion content, and social studies. Added the AAS 3, MathMammoth 3. I'm waiting to receive the materials I ordered, so I can add the other items to it, science, reading, grammar, art, handwriting.
It took a couple hours to set up the template, but it isn't taking long to input the information. And I can use it again next year when it's time to set up grade 4.
I was just going to scratch out and write what we're using, but since we are ending up some grade 2 some grade 3 items, I thought it would be best to make it tidy and fresh. I'll end up utilizing all the information in the planners, just not on the same timeline.
We're a year round school family here, so it is possible that everything will match up. Her favorite things to do is religion, reading bible or bible stories, so I can see her working ahead some. If she does great, if she sticks to the plan it's all good.
Sometimes I think I like planning the school year more than the school year itself!

I thought of you this morning as I was checking my email. I got a newsletter from Knowledge Quest. They are publishing a book next month about Canada. I couldn't find anything about it on the website, but this is what it said in the newsletter:
Quote:
In August, we will unveil our brand new title, O Canada! Her Story, by Karla Akins. Both Canadians and Americans are going to want to read this fascinating collection of historical narratives and biographies that tell Canada's story by featuring eight true stories to engage young and old readers alike. Find out about amazing individuals who shaped this second largest of all nations into the beautiful and fascinating country that it is today. So, stay posted and we'll bring you all of the details next month. |

I though this might interest you, and while I've never bought anything from them, I think some other ladies here have.

Seeker, thank you so much for thinking of me ;) I will definitely look into it. There is another great book out there, The Story of Canada. I've heard great things. I'm looking at the library for it. I'll see if it has anything, I'll look for the book your posted too. I think there is some pretty good possibilities out there. I have found many biographies on Canadian historical figures that I'd love to add too, which is why I'm kinda delaying her social program. She's a strong reader now, but not ready for that. So by 5th grade, she'll be able to devour those :) I think we'll have alot of fun with it.

This sounds wonderful! I am right in the same place as you are...a big CHC order ready to ship but I need to make my own planner as I never follow pre-made lesson plans (I tweak too much). Would you mind showing us the template? It would help me immensely as I am somewhat useless at figuring out how to do these things on my own!
I would love to help you with your Canadian History planning. I did a mini co-op on the History of Canada this past year with a small group from grades 3-5. I used the Story of Canada as a spine. I don't want to hijack this thread with details, but pm me and I would be glad to send you my outline and the resources that I used.

Tonight I ordered the rest of the materials we'll need :) So in a couple weeks, we'll be able to start school. DD12 is chomping at the bit..lol.
I have a few things she can do right away and get it out of the way, that she is required by the school board. So then it's done and we can focus on what I feel is more important.
This is great :) I have 2 weeks to get her planner somewhat in order. She IS doing some of the school board curriculum, but not that much.
I am so excited!

Everything came ;) We've got all our materials for the year.
I was going through the grade 3 science book, and it is FULL of experiments once you hit chapter 2. DD7 is going to LOVE it! This is going to be fun.
Loved the grammar and spelling at both levels, 3 and 7. In comparison to what dd12 did last year, she's going to enjoy this so much. The grammar provided by the school last year was tiny tiny print and tons of busy work, but minimal teaching in it. Spelling again is really to the point :) So we're very pleased.
Both social programs look like they'll keep the engaged, so overall I think it's going to be a great year with it. The religious component is heavier than what I am used to seeing, even with the kids having been in Catholic school, but that is all good :) It'll make for some great discussions.
I need to adapt the lesson plans slightly for dd12, we're using a couple things that are different, but that would take that long to do. Dd7 however is a blend of 2 and 3 plus a couple alternate sources..lol. SO hers will be highly customized. But it will be a fantastic, completely tailored to her.
