Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Can we talk about the child who doesn't seem to love learning? The one who just wants to know what has to be done and to finish it (as quickly and as painlessly as possible)?

Is it possible to reach this child and instill a love of learning or are some children just wired differently?

Is it possible that God's purpose for them does not require a love of learning?

It is just so hard for me to imagine NOT loving academics that I keep trying everything under the sun because I think I am the one that must be missing something. And maybe I am...

Thoughts?

I don't know Tracey. Empathy tho b/c I have one just like that. Actually, I think he wants to learn but just not what I want to teach (ya know, reading, writing, math ). And when these kids fit "outside the box" it def. makes it more difficult for us.

It is true that it is best to enjoy what should be done, thus not to enjoy academics while a student is to be regretted in much the same way as I regret the fact that I don't enjoy many physical activities. It may be well worth continuing to try finding some way to make academics more enjoyable just it is worthwhile for me to continue to try to find a way to enjoy exercise and chores.

That said, I've not found a corrolation between enjoyment of academics and living a virtuous life. The person that first comes to mind as someone who'd give his shirt off his back if necessary was never more then a plodder in school (and there are no shortage of less academically inclined saints).

Consider that this is a child that currently has other priorities. I've had a toddler that instead of working on learning to talk was way to interested in mastering physical activities to be bothered much with speech. You know what though.. he talks fine now 6 years later.

It may be that making things laid out to be done "as quickly and as painlessly as possible" IS what will help this child appreciate acedemics. Because when you stop fighting something.. then you can find enjoyment (or at least satisfaction) in it. It might also be that open ended things are so overwhelming that this child can't focus on what the thing actually is or find enjoyment because that open end to it is just too distracting.

This might be a child that "strewing" would work well for. Things that you might do as "school" with another child would take all the enjoyment out of it for this child, instead you just have it out and about so that it can be picked up without any expectations and enjoyed. And be sure and give this child some free rein in choosing things sometimes it's our ideas that they recoil from and just want the space to do their own exploration without mom jumping in and saying.. oh what's that? that's so neat? why don't we also do this activity? let me find a book about that.. and so on.

I have been thinking about this post a lot because my DS5 is very similar. He wants to "get school over with" as quickly as possible. He does LOVE doing science and history though (I am doing my own unit studies where we are spending 1-2 months per continent). I am not sure how old this child is, but could you involve him or her in the decision making process? Maybe he or she could pick a topic that interests him or her and do some research or even plan a small unit for the whole family to do together. Is the child being challenged enough? Maybe he or she is just bored because he or she isn't being challenged so it is easier to just get things done and move on in life. In any event, I will send some prayers for discernment your way.
